Coping styles in heterosexual and non-heterosexual students in Lebanon: a cross-sectional study ( Estilo de afrontamiento en estudiantes heterosexuales y no heterosexuales en Líbano: un estudio transversal )

The Lebanese population has been exposed to multiple stressors associated with political and economic instability for decades. Using survey data from 203 university students in Beirut, this study focuses on the factors that predict coping styles in men and women and heterosexual and non-heterosexual people in Lebanon. Heterosexual people reported higher religiosity and ethnic identification but lower psychological distress than non-heterosexual people. Women reported higher religiosity but lower identity resilience and engagement in the re-thinking/planning coping style than men. Religiosity was positively associated with identity resilience and ethnic identification but negatively associated with the social engagement coping style. Ethnic identification and identity resilience were positively associated with the social engagement and re-thinking/planning coping styles. Identity resilience and religiosity were negatively associated with psychological distress. The social engagement and re-thinking/planning coping styles were positively correlated. Results suggest that non-heterosexual people may be less likely to adopt adaptive coping styles because of their decreased religiosity and ethnic identification and that men and women have distinct pathways to adaptive coping strategies (through identity resilience and religiosity, respectively).

The focus of this study is upon differential coping styles in response to psychological adversity among men and women and heterosexual and non-heterosexual people in Lebanon. For decades, Lebanon has faced significant political, economic and societal challenges. These challenges include a long and bloody civil war (1975–90), repeated conflicts with neighbouring Israel and foreign occupation, as well as an economic downturn, devaluation of the currency and job insecurity. These issues have been further compounded by recent events. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant health, social and economic impact on Lebanon. Moreover, on 4 August 2020, an accidental explosion in Beirut resulted in over 6,000 deaths and injuries, the destruction of many thousands of homes and the devastation of much of the port area in Beirut (Arabiya, 2020). Consequently, it has been argued that Lebanese society is exposed to a multitude of social psychological stressors, which may cause psychological distress and undermine mental health outcomes in the general population (Jaspal, Assi et al., 2020).

It is likely that marginalized and disadvantaged groups in Lebanese society, such as non-heterosexual people, are at particularly high risk of poor outcomes. Empirical research shows that non-heterosexual people in Lebanon are at especially high risk of psychological distress due to stressors associated with their marginalized minority sexual identity (Assi et al., 2020; Orr et al., 2021). They may face family rejection, societal stigma and even prosecution due to their sexual orientation (Maatouk & Jaspal, 2019). Coping style is a key determinant of psychological well-being in the face of social psychological stressors and is the focus of this study. Data for this study were collected in March 2019 and, thus, provide an empirical snapshot of coping prior to both the COVID-19 outbreak and accidental explosion in a sample of heterosexual and non-heterosexual people in Lebanon. In addition, it is valuable to examine differential coping styles by gender given the patriarchal nature of Lebanese society and decreased help-seeking behaviours observed in men in Lebanon (Karam et al., 2019). Drawing on Identity Process Theory from social psychology, we examine differential coping styles in heterosexual and non-heterosexual people and men and women, respectively, and the social psychological factors that predict the adoption of the specific coping styles of re-thinking/planning and concealment/pretence. This can enable us to understand the social psychological facilitators and barriers to particular coping styles in response to stress-inducing events in Lebanese society.

A theoretical model predicting coping styles

In this article, a theoretical model based on Identity Process Theory for predicting coping styles in men and women and heterosexual and non-heterosexual people in Lebanon is tested.

In the remainder of this section, relevant literature focusing on Identity Process Theory, psychological distress and religious and ethnic identification is reviewed in order to explicate the hypothesized paths between the variables.

Identity Process Theory

Identity Process Theory (Breakwell, 1986; Jaspal & Breakwell, 2014) proposes that people strive to construct and maintain a sense of identity characterized by high levels of self-esteem (a positive self-conception); self-efficacy (feelings of competence and control); continuity (the belief that one’s past and present are connected); and distinctiveness (feelings of positive differentiation from others). The theory argues that events and situations that curtail these identity principles can result in the experience of identity threat, which is often correlated with negative affect and psychological distress (e.g., Jaspal, Lopes, Wignall et al., 2020).

In their recent development of Identity Process Theory, Breakwell and Jaspal (2021) have outlined the concept of identity resilience, which refers to having an identity that is characterized by higher levels of the four principles. Identity resilience is described as a self-schema akin to a trait, which is developed across the life course. Given the centrality of religion in Lebanese society (Haddad, 2002), it is predicted that religiosity will be positively associated with reported identity resilience. Breakwell and Jaspal (2021) have shown that identity resilience appears to be protective against negative affective experiences associated with stress-inducing events (in their study, the COVID-19 pandemic). However, there is other research indicating that having a more resilient identity is also associated with decreased negative affect in other empirical contexts, such as when recalling a negative past experience (Ritchie et al., 2016). In a similar vein, it is hypothesized that identity resilience will be negatively correlated with psychological distress.

Furthermore, those who report higher levels of self-esteem, continuity, self-efficacy and distinctiveness may be better positioned to cope with events and situations with the capacity to threaten identity. More specifically, people with higher identity resilience may feel more empowered to select effective coping strategies and to withstand the risks that these coping strategies often entail in the short term. It can therefore be predicted that identity resilience will, at least in part, determine the choice of coping strategy deployed in response to threats and challenges, with greater identity resilience being associated with more effective and sustainable coping strategies.

Drawing on Identity Process Theory, Jaspal, Lopes, Wignall et al. (2020) have described various coping styles, that is, the coping strategies that people habitually use in conjunction when they face identity threat. In this study, we examine the following three coping styles: concealment/pretence; social engagement; and re-thinking/planning. The concealment/pretence coping style refers to concealing aspects of one’s identity from others and presenting oneself inauthentically to others. Social engagement refers to engagement with, and mobilization of, groups and individuals in order to tackle the threat. Re-thinking/planning reflects the coping style of re-evaluating one’s identity and engaging actively with the threat in order to plan effectively. All three are coping styles in their own right. However, in this preliminary study, we focus on two coping styles operating principally at the intrapsychic level, namely re-thinking/planning and concealment/pretence, as key dependent variables. We selected these coping styles because re-thinking/planning and concealment/pretence are viewed as adaptive and maladaptive coping styles, respectively, and because they both operate at the intrapsychic level (Jaspal, Lopes, Wignall et al., 2020). Future research will need to examine the other coping styles as well. Given that it is often through engagement with other people (i.e., social engagement) that people gain exposure to novel social representations and, thus, novel ways of thinking about their predicament (Breakwell, 1986), it is predicted that social engagement will be positively associated with the (adaptive) re-thinking/planning coping style.

Although all three coping styles are designed to minimize identity threat, concealment/pretence is limited in its effectiveness and could be thought of as a short-term, unsustainable coping style. Since the concealment/pretence coping style focuses on deflection and avoidance, it is less psychologically taxing in the short term — after all, one does not need to confront the source of threat when using this coping style. On the other hand, both re-thinking/planning and social engagement require the individual to confront the threat to some extent and, in the case of social engagement, to risk stigma and judgement from others, which can be psychologically demanding in the short term. However, these coping styles, which are predicted to be correlated, are more effective and sustainable in the long term. It can therefore be hypothesized that those individuals with higher levels of identity resilience are more likely to favour these coping styles.

Psychological distress

Psychological distress refers to the ‘unpleasant emotional experience of a psychological (i.e., cognitive, behavioral, emotional) and/or social nature that interferes with an individual’s ability to effectively cope with a given situation’ (Sellick & Edwardson, 2007, p. 535). According to Identity Process Theory, psychological distress can arise in response to identity threat, especially when the threat is severe, unresolved and long-standing (Jaspal, 2018). Although psychological distress is often conceptualized as a dependent variable, in this study we examine its role as a precursor of coping — after all, one experiences distress and subsequently engages in varied coping strategies to reduce it (Breakwell, 1986; Deasy et al., 2014; Hardy et al., 2003).

Indeed, psychological distress can have significant implications for physical and psychological health (Ozbay et al., 2007). There is evidence of a high prevalence of psychological disorders, such as anxiety and mood disorders, in Lebanon, but formal help-seeking for these disorders has been found to be relatively low (Karam et al., 2008). In his cross-sectional survey of Lebanese college students, Wehbe (2011) found that self-stigma was associated with less favourable attitudes towards psychological counselling. Self-stigma may also preclude social engagement with other people in order to address psychological distress.

Previous research conducted in Lebanon generally suggests that women are especially prone to psychological distress (Ayyash-Abdo & Alamuddin, 2007; Barbour et al., 2012). However, Itani et al. (2018) found a 70% prevalence of exposure of community violence in Lebanese young adults (both men and women), which was also associated with psychological distress. Moreover, communal tensions and violence, war, and the COVID-19 pandemic and recent explosion in Beirut are likely to affect the entire population. There is limited research into coping styles among men and women in Lebanon, but patriarchal norms emphasizing male dominance may generally make help-seeking and social engagement (as coping strategies) difficult for men (Al-Krenawi et al., 2009; Karam et al., 2019). Yet, patriarchal gender norms in Lebanese society may also facilitate greater identity resilience in men, which in turn may provide access to more effective coping styles (see Khatib, 2008).

In this study, we also examine differential coping strategies among heterosexual and non-heterosexual people because there is global evidence that non-heterosexual people are more susceptible to depressive symptomatology due, in part, to stressors associated with their sexual minority status (e.g., Jaspal, Lopes, & Rehman, 2021; Rehman et al., 2020). In Lebanon, Orr et al. (2021) found that a third of their gay and bisexual male survey respondents reported previous experiences of discrimination or violence due to their sexual minority status and that low socio-economic status was a significant correlate of such experiences. In their qualitative interview study, Wagner et al. (2013) found that Lebanese gay and bisexual men face identity struggles in relation to their sexuality due to both perceived stigma from others and internal conflict in relation to their sexuality and religion. Similarly, Naamani (2018) found that sexuality-related shame-proneness was associated with disordered eating patterns in gay and bisexual men in Lebanon. In their survey of 226 young gay and bisexual men, Wagner et al. (2019) reported that almost two-thirds of their participants had experienced discrimination in the last year and that discomfort with one’s sexuality was the only predictor of major depression. More recently, Assi et al. (2020) have found that non-heterosexual people tend to report more psychological distress than heterosexual people in Lebanon, which they attribute to unfavourable social attitudes towards homosexuality. Given the disproportionately high risk of poor mental health among non-heterosexual people in Lebanon, it is important to understand coping styles in this population.

Religiosity and ethnic identification as gateways to coping

As proposed in Identity Process Theory, when people face psychological adversity, they attempt to cope. People use a variety of coping styles. In Lebanese society, religiosity has generally been shown to be protective against poor mental health (Khamis, 2012). People may engage with their religion (both in terms of spirituality and involvement in religious community) in order to cope with adverse events and experiences, such as bullying and conflict, as demonstrated in research conducted in Lebanon (Afifi et al., 2020; Farhood & Dimassi, 2012; Ghandour & El Sayed, 2013; Ghandour et al., 2009). It is insufficient to conceptualize religiosity as a coping strategy in and of itself. It is necessary to look at what other coping styles religiosity may be facilitating. For instance, it has been shown that in Lebanese society, religious coping may also promote post-traumatic growth following exposure to stress-inducing events (Moussa & Bates, 2011). In our model, we propose that religiosity is best regarded as a mediator, rather than dependent variable, in that it may be functioning as a ‘gateway’ to ethnic identification and identity resilience, which in turn are associated with adaptive coping styles.

Our measure of religiosity focuses mainly on the spiritual dimension of religion, such as prayer. Since religiosity is conceptualized in spiritual terms, it is likely to be negatively associated with psychological distress. This is consistent with research that shows that spirituality and spiritual experiences are generally associated with positive affect and life satisfaction (Van Dyke et al., 2009). Conversely, spirituality should be negatively associated with the coping style of social engagement (with focuses on engagement with groups and individuals), given that spirituality is distinguished from religion ‘as an individual expression’ focusing on one’s personal relationship with one’s faith (Pargament, 1999, p. 3).

The role of ethnic identification is less well researched in Lebanon. Although often correlated with religion, ethnicity is a separate identity in its own right. It could be hypothesized that, as an important social group membership in the sectarian Lebanese society (Haddad, 2002), ethnic identification is associated with effective coping. It has also been shown that one social group membership, such as religion, can be a ‘gateway’ to other group memberships, such as ethnicity (Wakefield et al., 2019). Ethnic identification is likely to capture the sense of community that people perceive in relation to their religion. It is therefore predicted that religiosity will be positively associated with ethnic identification. There is considerable evidence that meaningful group memberships and social connections, such as involvement in ethnic communities, are conducive to increased psychological well-being (Assi et al., 2020; Ellison, 1991; Jaspal, Lopes, & Breakwell, 2021; Wakefield et al., 2019). Thus, ethnic identification may provide individuals with contact with other ingroup members (and thus to novel social representations and ways of thinking about their predicament), thereby enabling them to engage in the adaptive coping styles of social engagement and re-thinking/planning.

Research indicates that women tend to manifest higher religiosity than men (Abdel-Khalek, 2015), suggesting that this form of coping may be more available to them. Conversely, non-heterosexual people may have less access to religious coping because they may perceive their religion to be less accepting and accommodating of their sexual orientation and because they view their religion and sexual orientation to be incompatible (Assi et al., 2020). In their interview study, Wagner et al. (2013) found that gay and bisexual men employed social avoidance and ‘passing’ (as heterosexual) as coping strategies in the face of discrimination and identity conflict. Their participants expressed a preference to avoid the source of threat, rather than confronting it. Our study examines why this may be the case.

Nagle (2018) describes some of the factors — not least the religious consociational political framework of Lebanon — which can make lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) activism and the mobilization of people in the defence of LGBT rights difficult in that society. Both the high levels of discrimination and the apparent preference for avoidant coping could be attributed to the lack of legal protection for non-heterosexual people in Lebanon, the use of legislation to prosecute non-heterosexual people and negative social attitudes towards homosexuality in Lebanese society (Maatouk & Jaspal, 2019; Obeid et al., 2020). Therefore, it is predicted that, through the social psychological variables of religiosity, ethnic identification, identity resilience and psychological distress, non-heterosexual people will be more prone to the maladaptive coping style of concealment/pretence.

Hypotheses

The following specific hypotheses, presented in the theoretical model of coping styles (Figure 1), are tested:

Heterosexual people will report higher ethnic identification and religiosity but lower psychological distress than non-heterosexual people.

Women will report higher religiosity but lower identity resilience and engagement in the re-thinking/planning coping style than men.

Religiosity will be positively associated with ethnic identification and identity resilience but negatively associated with the social engagement coping style.

Ethnic identification and identity resilience will be positively associated with the social engagement and re-thinking/planning coping styles.

Identity resilience and religiosity will be negatively associated with psychological distress.

Psychological distress will be positively associated with all three coping styles.

Social engagement will be positively associated with the re-thinking/planning coping style.

Methods

Ethics

The Health and Life Sciences Faculty Research Ethics Committee at De Montfort University, Leicester, UK, provided ethical approval for this study.

Participants

A convenience sample of 203 undergraduate students at a university in Beirut, Lebanon, participated in a survey study of identity resilience, psychological distress and coping. It is noteworthy that data were collected during March 2019, that is, before the COVID-19 outbreak and the recent explosion in Lebanon, both of which have had implications for psychological well-being in the general population (Jalabi & Georgy, 2020; Jaspal, Assi et al., 2020). Given our aim to examine differential coping styles in heterosexual and non-heterosexual students, we actively sought to recruit a diverse sample in terms of sexual orientation. Therefore, in addition to convenience sampling to the entire student body at a private university in Beirut, the study was publicized through an LGBT-focused social club at the university. It was hoped that this would result in a more balanced sample of heterosexual and non-heterosexual students. After reading the participant information sheet and providing consent, participants voluntarily and anonymously completed the survey online.

Participants were aged between 18 and 33 years (M = 20.1, SD = 2.22). There were 135 females (64.9%) and 68 males (32.7%). There were 141 (69.5%) heterosexuals and 62 (30.5%) non-heterosexuals — non-heterosexuals identified as bisexual (N = 39, 19.2%), gay (N = 14, 6.9%), lesbian (N = 8, 3.9%%) and other (N = 1, 0.5%). The majority of participants reported Lebanese nationality (N = 191, 94.1%); four (2%) reported Palestinian nationality; two (1%) Syrian nationality and six (3%) other Arab nationality. Seventy (34.5%) respondents described themselves as Christian Maronite, 40 (19.7%) as Sunni Muslim, 29 (14.3%) as Catholic, 25 (12.3%) as Shia Muslim, 17 (8.4%) as Greek Orthodox, 12 (5.9%) as Druze and 10 (4.9%) as Other. The majority of participants were single (N = 145, 71.4%), followed by 51 (25.1%) who were in a monogamous relationship, one (0.5%) in an open relationship, one (0.5%) engaged, three (1.5%) married and one (.5%) in a civil partnership.

Measures

Religiosity

Religiosity was measured using the five-item Abbreviated Santa Clara Strength of Religious Faith Questionnaire (Plante et al., 2002), which included items such as ‘I look to my faith as providing meaning and purpose in my life’. The items were measured on a five-point scale (1 = ‘strongly disagree’ to 5 = ‘strongly agree’). The items were summed with possible scores ranging from 5 to 25. A higher score indicated greater religiosity (α = .90).

Ethnic Identification

Ethnic identification was measured using the six-item Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure-Revised (Phinney & Ong, 2007), which included items such as ‘I have a strong sense of belonging to my own ethnic group’. The items were measured on a five-point scale (1 = ‘strongly disagree’ to 5 = ‘strongly agree’). The items were summed with possible scores ranging from 6 to 30. A higher score indicated greater ethnic identification (α = .84).

Identity Resilience

Identity resilience was measured using the six-item Identity Principles Scale (Murtagh et al., 2014) focusing on individuals’ overall perceptions of the identity principles (self-efficacy, self-esteem, continuity and distinctiveness). Items included ‘I have not changed in time’ (continuity) and ‘I see myself as someone who has high self-esteem’ (self-esteem). The items were measured on a five-point scale (1 = ‘strongly disagree’ to 5 = ‘strongly agree’). The items were summed with possible scores ranging from 6 to 30. A higher score indicated greater identity resilience (α = .68).

Psychological Distress

Psychological distress was measured using the 18-item Brief Symptom Inventory (Derogatis, 2001). Items included physical symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress, e.g., ‘Faintness or dizziness’; psychological symptoms of anxiety/panic and stress, e.g., ‘Feeling no interest on things’; and suicidal ideation, ‘Thoughts of ending your life’. Items were measured on a five-point scale (0 = ‘not at all’ to 4 = ‘extremely’). The items were summed with possible scores ranging from 0 to 72. A higher score indicated greater psychological distress (α = .94).

Coping Styles

Coping styles were measured separately using the Social Engagement, Concealment/Pretence and Re-Thinking/Planning Subscales of the Coping with Identity Threat Scale (Jaspal, Lopes, Wignall et al., 2020). The four-item Social Engagement Subscale included items such as ‘I tend to engage with other people to learn more about relevant issues’ (α = .75). The four-item Concealment/Pretence Subscale included items such as ‘I tend to convince myself that it is not really happening’ (α = .65). The five-item Re-Thinking/Planning Subscale consisted of items such as ‘I tend to re-think what things really mean’ (α = .65). They were measured on a five-point scale (1 = ‘not at all true of me’ to 5 = ‘very true of me’). The items for the three scales were summed with possible scores ranging from 4 to 20 for social engagement; 4 to 20 for concealment/pretence; and 5 to 25 for re-thinking/planning.

Statistical analyses

SPSS version 26 was used to perform the analyses. First, independent samples t-tests bootstrapped at 1,000 samples were performed to analyse differences between the main groups in the sample (gender: male vs. female; and sexual orientation: heterosexual vs. non-heterosexual) for the key variables. Cohen’s ds and 95% Confidence Intervals (CIs) were reported to show the strength of between-group mean differences for the key variables. Second, a structural equation model was performed with a bootstrap at 200 samples to measure the relationship between the independent variables of sexual orientation and gender; the mediator variables of psychological distress, identity resilience, religiosity, ethnic identification and social engagement; and the dependent variables of re-thinking/planning and concealment/pretence.

Results

Descriptive statistics

Please see Table 1 for a summary of the descriptive statistics for the key variables of interest.

Differences between heterosexuals and non-heterosexuals on main variables

Independent samples t-tests showed that heterosexuals reported higher ethnic identification [t(201) = 2.79, p = .006] and religiosity [t(201) = 3.22, p = .001] than non-heterosexuals, and that non-heterosexuals reported much more psychological distress [t(206) = −3.09, p = .002] than heterosexuals. These results support hypothesis 1.

Differences between men and women on main variables

Independent samples t-tests showed that women reported higher religiosity than men [t(201) = −2.04, p < .05] but that men reported higher identity resilience [t(201) = 3.58, p < .001] and higher engagement in the re-thinking/planning coping style [t(201) = 3.32, p = .001] than women. These results support hypothesis 2.

Table 2 provides a full summary of the means, standard deviations, effect sizes and 95% CIs.

Correlations

Religiosity was positively associated with ethnic identification [r(201) = .41, p < .001] and identity resilience [r(201) = .21, p = .003] and negatively associated with psychological distress [r(201) = −.25, p = .001]. Ethnic identification was positively correlated with the adaptive coping styles of social engagement [r(201) = .18, p = .009] and re-thinking/planning [r(201) = .16, p = .027]. Identity resilience was negatively associated with psychological distress [r(201) = −.28, p < .001]. Psychological distress was positively associated with social engagement [r(201) = .18, p = .009], concealment/pretence [r(201) = .29, p < .001] and re-thinking/planning [r(201) = .33, p < .001]. Social engagement was positively associated with re-thinking/planning [r(201) = .33, p < .001]. Concealment/pretence was positively associated with re-thinking/planning [r(201) = .33, p < .001].

Structural equation model

A structural equation model, based on the theoretical model presented in Figure 1, was tested with a bootstrap at 200 with the main predictors of sexual orientation (heterosexual = 0 vs non-heterosexual = 1) and gender (male = 0 vs female = 1); the mediators (psychological distress, identity resilience, religiosity, ethnic identification and social engagement); and the dependent variables of concealment/pretence and re-thinking/planning. The model fit was excellent with a χ²(18, 201) = 26.80, p > .05, a Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA) of .05, a Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI) of .92 and a Comparative Fit Index (CFI) of .96. As indicated in Figure 2 all of the hypothesized paths were significant.

Being non-heterosexual was associated with greater psychological distress [β = .15, SE = 2.57; p = .027], which in turn had direct positive effects on concealment/pretence [β = .29, SE = 0.01; p < .001], re-thinking/planning [β = .33, SE = 0.01; p < .001] and social engagement [β = .23, SE = 0.02; p < .001]. This result supports hypothesis 6. There were also mediation effects. First, being non-heterosexual was associated with decreased religiosity [β = −.23, SE = 0.88; p < .001], which in turn was negatively associated with psychological distress [β = −.16, SE = 0.20; p = .024]. Second, religiosity was negatively associated with social engagement [β = −.19, SE = 0.05; p = .009], which in turn was positively associated with re-thinking/planning [β = .21, SE = 0.07; p = .001]. This result supports hypothesis 3. Third, religiosity was positively associated with ethnic identification [β = .41, SE = 0.05; p < .001], which in turn was positively associated with social engagement [β = .29, SE = 0.06; p < .001] and re-thinking/planning [β = .18, SE = 0.05; p = .004]. Fourth, religiosity was positively associated with identity resilience [β = .25, SE = 0.05; p < .001], which in turn was negatively associated with psychological distress [β = −.23, SE = 0.27; p < .001] and positively associated with social engagement [β = .21, SE = 0.06; p = .002]. These results support hypotheses 4, 5 and 7.

Gender had direct effects on the dependent variables. Being female was associated with lower re-thinking/planning [β = −.23, SE = 0.50; p < .001] but also with lower concealment/pretence [β = −.14, SE = 0.52; p = .040]. There were also mediation effects. First, being female was associated with lower identity resilience [β = −.28, SE = 0.62; p < .001], which in turn was associated with social engagement, as noted above. Second, being female was associated with increased religiosity [β = .15, SE = 0.86; p = .025], which in turn was associated directly and indirectly with the three coping variables, as noted above.

Discussion

The hypotheses embedded in the theoretical model of predicting coping styles presented in Figure 1 were supported by the SEM. In this article, it has been shown that sexual orientation has indirect effects, and gender both direct and indirect effects, on the adaptive coping style of re-thinking/planning and on the maladaptive coping style of concealment/pretence through the mediators of psychological distress, religiosity, ethnic identification, identity resilience and social engagement. These results suggest that men and women and heterosexuals and non-heterosexuals in Lebanon are likely to be deploying distinct coping styles in response to stress-inducing events. In particular, our findings indicate that non-heterosexual people may have decreased access to the adaptive coping styles of social engagement and, thus, re-thinking/planning and that there may be distinct pathways to coping styles among men and women.

Psychological distress was associated with each of the three coping styles. This can be attributed to the fact that individuals will deploy a multitude of available coping strategies in order to minimize or eradicate a threat to their psychological well-being (Breakwell, 1986). These coping strategies may function individually or in conjunction with one another. It is possible that over time some coping styles, such as social engagement, facilitate access to other adaptive coping styles, such as re-thinking/planning. This hypothesis was supported by our data. For instance, an individual may come to engage with others about an aspect of their identity (e.g., their sexual orientation) before subsequently re-evaluating their sexual orientation and assimilating-accommodating it in the identity structure. They may re-think and plan for the future while engaging with others. Furthermore, it is likely that individuals who employ a variety of coping styles do so in accordance with social context (Bolger & Eckenrode, 1991). For instance, non-heterosexual people in Lebanon may elect to conceal their sexual identity in religious settings but engage socially with other non-heterosexual people in the university context. It is therefore unsurprising that the coping styles are all individually associated with reported psychological distress, which is a precursor of coping. Future research will need to examine the impact of distinct coping styles on levels of psychological distress, which would shed light on their efficacy.

The mediation effects provide greater context to coping style. The results show that non-heterosexual people report lower religiosity, possibly due to the perceived conflict between their sexuality and religion (Wagner et al., 2013). Yet, religiosity is negatively associated with psychological distress, suggesting that this practice performs a protective function. Furthermore, the results indicate that it is through religiosity that individuals gain access to an ethnic identity, which in turn is associated with the adaptive coping styles of re-thinking/planning and social engagement. There was, however, a negative correlation between religiosity and the social engagement coping style. This may be attributed to the spiritual, individualized focus of our religiosity measure, rather than the focus on institutionalized religion in other measures. Another explanation is that, in view of the strong norms associated with religion, religiosity could reduce willingness to confide in, exchange confidences with and seek support from others, especially in relation to stigmatized issues that can cause psychological distress (Maatouk & Jaspal, 2019). These findings suggest that, due to their decreased religiosity and, thus, ethnic identification, non-heterosexual people may be less likely to adopt these coping styles. Non-heterosexual people may ordinarily feel excluded from their religious and ethnic groups and, thus, disengage from them (Assi et al., 2020; Wagner et al., 2013). It will be important to ensure continued access to these coping resources in non-heterosexuals. However, it is noteworthy that this does reflect the pathway to adaptive coping among women, who generally report higher religiosity than men (Abdel-Khalek & Duregger, 2015)

There is a social group dimension to coping. Although other studies in Lebanon have focused on the role of religiosity in coping (Afifi et al., 2020; Farhood & Dimassi, 2012; Ghandour & El Sayed, 2013; Ghandour et al., 2009), our results indicate that the variable of ethnic identification is an important determinant of adaptive coping. Consistent with the social cure perspective in social psychology (Wakefield et al., 2019), it is likely that religiosity constitutes a ‘gateway’ to, or facilitator of, ethnic group identification, in that people who identify with religion are more likely to engage with other members of their ethnic group and, thus, to simultaneously develop a stronger sense of ethnic identity. As a significant group membership in the sectarian society of Lebanon, ethnicity in and of itself may be an important source of identity, social representations and social support. Furthermore, it is closely associated with religiosity, with people in Lebanon often defining their religion in ethnic terms (Haddad, 2002). More specifically, individuals may not necessarily espouse particular religious beliefs or manifest a spiritual attachment but may derive a sense of ethnic identity that is closely associated with their religion (Beyers, 2017). It is noteworthy that our measure of religiosity focused principally on religious faith, rather than involvement in religious community. Thus, the ethnic identification measure may actually be reflecting the community dimension of religion, which is predictably associated with the social engagement coping style. Put simply, an individual with access to, and a high sense of identification with, a meaningful social group, such as ethnicity, is more likely to adopt the social engagement coping style than an individual with no such access.

There is also an individual identity dimension to coping. Consistent with Identity Process Theory (Breakwell & Jaspal, 2021), the results show that identity resilience, that is, having an identity characterized by higher levels of self-esteem, self-efficacy, continuity and distinctiveness, was associated with the adaptive coping style of social engagement and, thus, re-thinking/planning. This particular coping style has been shown to be effective in the long term, but it can be psychologically taxing in the short term. After all, by engaging with others socially to cope, the individual may expose himself/herself to stigma, judgment and rejection from others. This is especially true of non-heterosexual people in Lebanon whose sexual identity is stigmatized (Obeid et al., 2020). However, having a more resilient identity may provide the confidence and, thus, ability to engage in the social engagement coping style, thereby facilitating the adaptive coping style of re-thinking/planning. Our results show that the pathway to the adaptive coping style of social engagement among men is through identity resilience, which may be more readily available to men in an essentially patriarchal society, such as that of Lebanon (Khatib, 2008).

A key question is how one develops identity resilience in the Lebanese context. The results suggest that religiosity is a predictor of identity resilience, further reiterating the importance of religion in Lebanese society. More specifically, it is possible that, because religion is so culturally valued in Lebanese society, providing a sense of meaning in one’s life (Shaery-Eisenlohr, 2008), people are more likely to derive a sense of self-esteem, self-efficacy, continuity and distinctiveness from this particular identity. Yet, in view of the decreased access to religion among non-heterosexual people, it is important to examine how people in this population develop a sense of identity resilience and, crucially, how identity resilience can be facilitated.

Limitations

This preliminary study has several limitations, which should be addressed in future work. First, as a cross-sectional study, this piece of research provides only an empirical snapshot of coping prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, which is associated with negative affect and distress (Jaspal, Assi et al., 2020), and the more recent explosion in Beirut, which has also caused significant distress (Jalabi & Georgy, 2020). It would be advantageous to examine coping in the context of these more recent events using a cross-sequential research design, that is, in ‘real time’. Similarly, the cross-sectional design precludes conclusions about causality. While we treated psychological distress as an independent variable, it is quite possible that coping styles also have an impact on psychological distress. This should be examined further. Second, the study provides insight into the indirect effects of sexual orientation (heterosexual vs non-heterosexual) on coping styles but, due to the relatively small sample size of non-heterosexual people, it was not possible to differentiate between lesbian, gay and bisexual people. It is challenging to recruit non-heterosexual participants in societies that are less affirmative of sexual diversity, such as that of Lebanon. However, future research should attempt to examine the differential pathways to coping in these diverse groups. Given the focus on gay and bisexual men in previous research in Lebanon, this would be a useful addition to the literature. Third, data were collected from students at a relatively affluent English-speaking university in Beirut using a convenience sampling approach. It is therefore not possible to generalize the findings beyond this particular convenience sample. Future research should build on this study by examining data collected from people of different socio-economic backgrounds and from distinct geographical areas in Lebanon (i.e., outside Beirut). Similarly, it would be advantageous to replicate these findings in other marginalized populations in Lebanon, such as Palestinian and Syrian refugees.

Conclusions

The Lebanese general population has faced a multitude of social psychological stressors over the last few decades, including the COVID-19 outbreak and the explosion in Beirut in 2020. It is vital to examine, describe and predict coping styles in various groups in society. Our findings suggest that non-heterosexual people may be less likely to adopt the adaptive coping styles of social engagement and re-thinking/planning than heterosexual people due to decreased levels of religiosity and ethnic identification, and that men and women have distinct pathways to adaptive coping styles. Identity resilience, religiosity and ethnic identification appear to be key determinants of effective coping. Interventions in Lebanon would do well to focus on making religion, ethnic identification and identity resilience more accessible to sexual minorities through programmes of social change. These programmes of social change should promote inclusivity and challenge negative social representations of sexual minorities, which have insidious effects not only for psychological well-being but also sense of belonging in this population. Furthermore, therapeutic interventions ought to focus on building identity resilience in people who are at risk of psychological distress and who engage with mental health services. It is hoped that the evidence presented in this article will form the basis for future research and interventions in relation to psychological well-being in Lebanese society.

Estilo de afrontamiento en estudiantes heterosexuales y no heterosexuales en Líbano: un estudio transversal

El objetivo de este estudio son los diferentes estilos de afrontamiento en respuesta a adversidades psicológicas entre hombres y mujeres, y personas heterosexuales y no heterosexuales en Líbano. Durante décadas, Líbano ha tenido que afrontar considerables desafíos políticos, económicos y sociales. Estos desafíos incluyen una prolongada y sangrienta guerra civil (1975–90), conflictos reiterados con la vecina Israel, y ocupación extranjera, así como también una crisis económica, devaluación de la moneda, e inseguridad laboral. La pandemia de la COVID-19 ha tenido un impacto significativo sobre lo social, lo económico, y la salud en Líbano. Por otra parte, el 4 de agosto de 2020, una explosión accidental en Beirut produjo más de 6,000 muertos y heridos, la destrucción de muchos miles de hogares, y la devastación de gran parte de la zona portuaria de Beirut (Arabiya, 2020). Como consecuencia, se ha afirmado que la sociedad de libanesa está expuesta a una multitud de factores estresantes psicológicos y sociales que pueden causar trastornos psicológicos y minar la salud mental de la población en general (Jaspal, Assi et al., 2020).

Es probable que los grupos marginales y desfavorecidos de la sociedad libanesa, como pueden ser las personas no heterosexuales, corran un riesgo particularmente alto de sufrir consecuencias perjudiciales. Las investigaciones empíricas muestran que las personas no heterosexuales en Líbano corren un riesgo especialmente alto de sufrir trastornos psicológicos debido a factores estresantes asociados con su identidad sexual que corresponde a una minoría marginal (Assi et al., 2020; Orr et al., 2021). Estas personas pueden tener que hacer frente al rechazo familiar, a los estigmas sociales, e incluso a penalizaciones legales debido a su orientación sexual (Maatouk & Jaspal, 2019). El estilo de afrontamiento es un factor determinante clave de bienestar psicológico frente a factores estresantes psicológicos y sociales, y es el objetivo de este estudio. Los datos para este estudio se reunieron en marzo de 2019 y, por tanto, ofrecen un panorama empírico de afrontamiento previo al inicio de la pandemia de la COVID-19 y de la explosión accidental, en una muestra de personas heterosexuales y no heterosexuales en Líbano. Además, resulta útil examinar diferentes estilos de afrontamiento según el sexo, dada la naturaleza patriarcal de la sociedad libanesa y la menor cantidad de conductas dirigidas a buscar ayuda que se han observado entre los hombres libaneses (Karam et al., 2019). Basándonos en la Teoría del Proceso de la Identidad (TPI) de la psicología social, analizamos diferentes estilos de afrontamiento en personas heterosexuales y no heterosexuales y entre hombres y mujeres, respectivamente, y los factores psicológicos y sociales que predicen la adopción de los estilos de afrontamiento específicos reconsiderar/planificar y ocultación/fingimiento. Esto puede permitirnos comprender los facilitadores psicológicos y sociales, y los obstáculos para los estilos de afrontamiento específicos como respuesta a eventos que producen estrés en la sociedad libanesa.

Un modelo teórico que predice estilos de afrontamiento

En este artículo, se pone a prueba un modelo teórico basado en la Teoría del Proceso de la Identidad, para predecir estilos de afrontamiento en hombres y mujeres, y en personas heterosexuales y no heterosexuales en Líbano.

En el resto de esta sección se analiza la literatura relevante poniendo el foco en la Teoría del Proceso de la Identidad, los trastornos psicológicos, y la identificación religiosa y étnica, con el fin de explicar las vías hipotetizadas entre las variables.

Teoría del Proceso de la Identidad

La Teoría del Proceso de la Identidad (Breakwell, 1986; Jaspal & Breakwell, 2014) propone que las personas luchan por construir y mantener una sensación de identidad caracterizada por altos niveles de autoestima (un concepto positivo de uno mismo); autoeficacia (sensaciones de competencia y control); continuidad (la creencia de que el pasado y el presente propios están conectados); y singularidad (sensaciones de ser diferente de los demás en un sentido positivo). La teoría sostiene que los eventos y situaciones que restringen estos principios de identidad pueden resultar en la experiencia de sentir amenazada la propia identidad, lo que con frecuencia se correlaciona con afectos negativos y trastornos psicológicos (por ejemplo, Jaspal, Lopes, Wignall et al., 2020).

En su reciente desarrollo de la Teoría del Proceso de la Identidad, Breakwell y Jaspal (2021) han destacado el concepto de resiliencia de la identidad, que se refiere a tener una identidad caracterizada por niveles superiores de los cuatro principios. La resiliencia de la identidad se describe como un auto-esquema semejante a un rasgo, que se desarrolla a lo largo del curso de la vida. Dado el carácter central de la religión en la sociedad libanesa (Haddad, 2002), se prevé que la religiosidad se asociará positivamente con la resiliencia de la identidad comunicada. Breakwell y Jaspal (2021) han mostrado que la resiliencia de la identidad parece servir como protección frente a experiencias afectivas negativas relacionadas con eventos que producen estrés (en su estudio, la pandemia de la COVID-19). No obstante, existe otra investigación que indica que una identidad más resiliente también está asociada a una disminución de afectos negativos en otros contextos empíricos, como por ejemplo al recordar una experiencia pasada negativa (Ritchie et al., 2016). De forma similar, la hipótesis es que la resiliencia de la identidad se correlacionará negativamente con los trastornos psicológicos.

Por otra parte, aquellos que presentan niveles superiores de autoestima, continuidad, autoeficacia, y singularidad pueden estar mejor posicionados para afrontar eventos y situaciones que puedan suponer una amenaza para la identidad. Más específicamente, las personas con mayor resiliencia de identidad pueden sentirse más empoderadas para elegir estrategias de afrontamiento efectivas, y soportar los riesgos que estas estrategias a menudo entrañan a corto plazo. Por lo tanto, es posible prever que la resiliencia de la identidad determinará, al menos parcialmente, la elección de la estrategia de afrontamiento implementada en respuesta a las amenazas y desafíos, y una mayor resiliencia de la identidad está asociada a estrategias de afrontamiento más efectivas y sostenibles.

Basándose en la Teoría del Proceso de la Identidad, Jaspal, Lopes, Wignall et al. (2020) han descrito diversos estilos de afrontamiento, es decir, estrategias de afrontamiento que las personas utilizan habitualmente de forma conjunta cuando se enfrentan a una amenaza de su identidad. En este estudio analizamos los siguientes tres estilos de afrontamiento: ocultación/fingimiento; compromiso social y reconsiderar/planificar. El estilo de afrontamiento ocultación/fingimiento se refiere a encubrir aspectos de la propia identidad y presentarse ante los demás de una forma que no es auténtica. El compromiso social se refiere a relacionarse con grupos e individuos, y movilizarlos con el fin de afrontar la amenaza. Reconsiderar/planificar refleja el estilo de afrontamiento que implica reevaluar la propia identidad, y tener una conducta activa frente a la amenaza con el fin de planificar de forma eficaz. Los tres son estilos de afrontamiento por derecho propio. No obstante, en este estudio preliminar, nos centramos en dos estilos de afrontamiento que actúan principalmente a un nivel intrapsíquico, a saber, reconsiderar/planificar y ocultación/fingimiento, como variables dependientes clave. Seleccionamos estos estilos de afrontamiento porque reconsiderar/planificar y ocultación/fingimiento son considerados estilos de afrontamiento adaptativo y no adaptativo, respectivamente, y porque ambos funcionan a nivel intrapsíquico (Jaspal, Lopes, Wignall et al., 2020). Futuras investigaciones deberán analizar también los otros estilos de afrontamiento. Teniendo en cuenta que suele ser a través del compromiso con otras personas (es decir, compromiso social) como las personas pueden exponerse a representaciones sociales novedosas y, por tanto, a formas novedosas de reflexionar sobre su difícil situación (Breakwell, 1986), se prevé que el compromiso social se asociará positivamente con el estilo de afrontamiento reconsiderar/planificar (adaptativo).

Aunque los tres estilos de afrontamiento están diseñados para minimizar la amenaza de la identidad, el estilo ocultamiento/fingimiento tiene una eficacia limitada y podría considerarse como un estilo de afrontamiento no sostenible a corto plazo. Dado que el estilo de afrontamiento ocultación/fingimiento se centra en el desvío y la evitación, implica una menor carga psicológica a corto plazo, después de todo al utilizar este estilo de afrontamiento no es necesario confrontarse con el origen de la amenaza. Por otro lado, tanto el estilo reconsiderar/planificar como compromiso social requieren que el individuo se enfrente en cierta medida a la amenaza y, en el caso del compromiso social, que se arriesgue a ser estigmatizado y enjuiciado por otras personas, lo que puede ser psicológicamente desgastante a corto plazo. No obstante, estos estilos de afrontamiento, que se prevé estén correlacionados, son más efectivos y sostenibles a largo plazo. En consecuencia, se puede establecer la hipótesis de que los individuos con niveles superiores de resiliencia de la identidad tienen más probabilidades de favorecer estos estilos de afrontamiento.

Trastornos psicológicos

El concepto de trastorno psicológico se refiere a la ‘desagradable experiencia emocional de naturaleza psicológica (es decir, cognitiva, conductual, emocional) y/o social que interfiere con la capacidad individual de afrontar eficazmente una determinada situación’ (Sellick & Edwardson, 2007, p. 535). De acuerdo con la Teoría del Proceso de la Identidad, los trastornos psicológicos pueden surgir en respuesta a una amenaza de la identidad, especialmente cuando esa amenaza es grave y prolongada, y no se resuelve (Jaspal, 2018). Pese a que los trastornos psicológicos a menudo se definen como una variable independiente, en este estudio analizamos su función como precursores del afrontamiento — después de todo, cuando el individuo experimenta malestar implementa a continuación diversas estrategias de afrontamiento para reducirlo (Breakwell, 1986; Deasy et al., 2014; Hardy et al., 2003).

De hecho, los trastornos psicológicos pueden tener implicaciones significativas para la salud física y psicológica (Ozbay et al., 2007). Existen evidencias de una mayor prevalencia de trastornos psicológicos — como la ansiedad y los trastornos emocionales — en Líbano, aunque la búsqueda de ayuda formal para solucionar estos trastornos es relativamente baja (Karam et al., 2008). En este estudio transversal de estudiantes universitarios libaneses, Wehbe (2011) se halló que el auto-estigma se asociaba a actitudes menos favorables con respecto a la terapia psicológica. El auto-estigma también puede impedir que se recurra al compromiso social con otras personas para resolver el malestar psicológico.

Investigaciones previas realizadas en Líbano generalmente sugieren que las mujeres son especialmente propensas a los trastornos psicológicos (Ayyash-Abdo & Alamuddin, 2007; Barbour et al., 2012). No obstante, Itani et al. (2018) hallaron un 70% de prevalencia de exposición a la violencia de la comunidad en adultos jóvenes libaneses (tanto hombres como mujeres), que también estaba relacionada con trastornos psicológicos. Además, es probable que la violencia y las tensiones comunitarias, la guerra y la pandemia de la COVID-19, y la reciente explosión en Beirut afecten a toda la población. Existen muy pocas investigaciones sobre los estilos de afrontamiento entre hombres y mujeres en Líbano, pero las normas patriarcales que ponen el énfasis en la dominancia masculina pueden obstaculizar la búsqueda de ayuda y el compromiso social (como estrategias de afrontamiento) para los hombres (Al-Krenawi et al., 2009; Karam et al., 2019). Sin embargo, las normas de género patriarcal en la sociedad libanesa también pueden facilitar una mayor resiliencia de la identidad en los hombres, lo que a su vez puede ofrecer acceso a un mayor número de estilos de afrontamiento eficaces (ver Khatib, 2008).

En este estudio también analizamos las diferentes estrategias de afrontamiento entre personas heterosexuales y no heterosexuales, porque existe evidencia global de que las personas no heterosexuales son más susceptibles de sufrir síntomas depresivos debido, en parte, a los factores estresantes asociados con su condición sexual minoritaria (por ejemplo, Jaspal, Lopes, & Rehman, 2021; Rehman et al., 2020). En Líbano, Orr et al. (2021) hallaron que un tercio de los participantes de su estudio con sujetos masculinos gay y bisexuales comunicó experiencias previas de discriminación o violencia debido a su condición sexual minoritaria, y que el bajo nivel socioeconómico era un correlato significativo de dichas experiencias. En su estudio de entrevistas cualitativas, Wagner et al. (2013) hallaron que los hombres gay y bisexuales libaneses afrontan luchas de identidad en relación con su sexualidad debido al estigma percibido por los demás y también al conflicto interno concerniente a su sexualidad y religión. De modo similar, Naamani (2018) halló que la tendencia a avergonzarse por la propia sexualidad estaba asociada a los patrones de alimentación desordenados de los hombres gay y bisexuales en Líbano. En su estudio con 226 hombres jóvenes gay y bisexuales, Wagner et al. (2019) comunicaron que prácticamente 2/3 de los participantes habían sufrido discriminación durante el último año, y que el malestar por la propia sexualidad era el único factor de predicción de una depresión severa. Más recientemente, Assi et al. (2020) descubrieron que las personas no heterosexuales tienden a presentar más trastornos psicológicos que las heterosexuales en Líbano, y lo atribuyen a actitudes sociales desfavorables en relación con la homosexualidad. Teniendo en cuenta el riesgo desproporcionadamente alto de que exista una salud mental precaria entre las personas no heterosexuales en Líbano, es importante comprender los estilos de afrontamiento en esta población.

Religiosidad e identificación étnica como vías para el afrontamiento

Tal como propone la Teoría del Proceso de la Identidad, cuando las personas se enfrentan a adversidades psicológicas intentan afrontarlas, y para ello recurren a una variedad de estilos de afrontamiento. En la sociedad libanesa, por lo general la religiosidad ha demostrado proteger a sus ciudadanos de una salud mental precaria (Khamis, 2012). Las personas pueden comprometerse con su religión (tanto en términos de espiritualidad como de compromiso con la comunidad religiosa) con el fin de afrontar experiencias y eventos adversos, como pueden ser el bullying y los conflictos, como han demostrado las investigaciones realizadas en Líbano (Afifi et al., 2020; Farhood & Dimassi, 2012; Ghandour & El Sayed, 2013; Ghandour et al., 2009). No es suficiente con conceptualizar la religiosidad como una estrategia de afrontamiento en y por sí misma. Es necesario observar qué otros estilos de afrontamiento puede estar facilitando la religiosidad. Por ejemplo, se ha demostrado que en la sociedad libanesa, el afrontamiento religioso puede también promover un crecimiento postraumático después de haber estado expuesto a eventos que producen estrés (Moussa & Bates, 2011). En nuestro modelo proponemos que es mejor considerar la religiosidad como un mediador y no como una variable dependiente, dado que puede estar actuando como una ‘vía’ para acceder a la identificación étnica y la resiliencia de la identidad, que a su vez están asociadas con estilos de afrontamiento adaptativo.

Nuestra medida de religiosidad se centra principalmente en la dimensión espiritual de la religión, como la plegaria. Dado que la religiosidad se conceptualiza en términos espirituales, es probablemente que se asocie negativamente con los trastornos psicológicos. Esto coincide con las investigaciones que muestran que la espiritualidad y las experiencias espirituales por lo general están asociadas a afectos positivos y satisfacción con la propia vida (Van Dyke et al., 2009). Y a la inversa, la espiritualidad se asociaría negativamente con el estilo de afrontamiento compromiso social (que pone el foco en la interacción con grupos e individuos) ya que la espiritualidad se diferencia de la religión, es ‘como una expresión individual’ que se centra en la relación personal con la propia fe (Pargament, 1999, p. 3).

El rol de la identificación étnica no se ha investigado en profundidad en Líbano. Aunque a menudo está correlacionada con la religión, la etnicidad es una identidad separada por propio derecho. Se podría postular la hipótesis de que, como una afiliación de grupo importante en la sectaria sociedad libanesa (Haddad, 2002), la identificación étnica está asociada con el afrontamiento eficaz. También se ha mostrado que una pertenencia a un grupo social, como puede ser la religión, puede ser una vía de acceso para otras pertenencias a grupos sociales, como la etnicidad (Wakefield et al., 2019). La identificación étnica probablemente capta la sensación de comunidad percibida por las personas en relación con su religión. Por lo tanto, se prevé que la religiosidad se asociará positivamente con la identificación étnica. Existen considerables evidencias de que la pertenencia a grupos y las conexiones sociales significativas, tal como la implicación en comunidades étnicas, conducen a un mayor bienestar psicológico (Assi et al., 2020; Ellison, 1991; Jaspal, Lopes, & Breakwell, 2021; Wakefield et al., 2019). En consecuencia, la identificación étnica puede ofrecer a los individuos contacto con otros miembros del grupo (y, por tanto, con representaciones sociales y modos de pensar novedosos acerca de su difícil situación), habilitándolos para recurrir a los estilos de afrontamiento adaptativo compromiso social y reconsiderar/planificar.

Las investigaciones indican que las mujeres tienden a manifestar una mayor religiosidad que los hombres (Abdel-Khalek & Duregger, 2015), lo que sugiere que esta forma de afrontamiento puede ser más accesible para ellas. A la inversa, es probable que las personas que no son heterosexuales tengan menos acceso el afrontamiento religioso porque pueden percibir que su religión es menos permisiva y flexible respecto de su orientación sexual, y porque consideran que su religión y orientación sexual son incompatibles (Assi et al., 2020). En su estudio de entrevistas, Wagner et al. (2013) hallaron que los hombres gay y bisexuales emplearon la evitación social y ‘pasar’ (como heterosexuales) como estrategias de afrontamiento ante la discriminación y el conflicto de identidad. Sus participantes expresaron su preferencia por evitar el origen de la amenaza en vez de confrontarse con ella. Nuestro estudio analiza por qué puede darse esta situación.

Nagle (2018) describe algunos de los factores — y no es poco importante la estructura socio-política y religiosa del Líbano — que pueden dificultar el activismo de las lesbianas, los gays, los bisexuales y los transexuales (LGBT) y la movilización de las personas en defensa de los derechos del colectivo LGBT en esa sociedad. Tanto los altos niveles de discriminación como la aparente preferencia por evitar el afrontamiento podrían atribuirse a la falta de protección legal para las personas no heterosexuales en Líbano, el uso de la legislación para procesar a las personas no heterosexuales, y las actitudes sociales negativas de la sociedad libanesa frente a la homosexualidad (Maatouk & Jaspal, 2019; Obeid et al., 2020). Por lo tanto, se prevé que a través de las variables psicológicas y sociales de religiosidad, identificación étnica, resiliencia de la identidad y trastornos psicológicos, las personas no heterosexuales serán más proclives a adoptar el estilo de afrontamiento no adaptativo de ocultación/fingimiento.

Hipótesis

Se evalúan las siguientes hipótesis específicas, presentadas en el modelo teórico de estilos de afrontamiento (Figura 1):

Las personas heterosexuales manifestarán mayor identificación étnica y religiosidad, pero menos trastornos psicológicos que las personas no heterosexuales.

Las mujeres manifestarán tener mayor religiosidad, pero menor resiliencia de la identidad y compromiso en su estilo de afrontamiento reconsiderar/planificar que los hombres.

La religiosidad se asociará positivamente con la identificación étnica y la resiliencia de la identidad, pero negativamente con el estilo de afrontamiento compromiso social.

La identificación étnica y la resiliencia de la identidad se asociarán positivamente con los estilos de afrontamiento compromiso social y reconsiderar/planificar.

La resiliencia de la identidad y la religiosidad se asociarán negativamente con los trastornos psicológicos.

Los trastornos psicológicos se asociarán positivamente con los tres estilos de afrontamiento.

El compromiso social se asociará positivamente con el estilo de afrontamiento reconsiderar/planificar.

Métodos

Ética

El Comité de Ética de la Investigación de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Vida y la Salud de la Universidad de Montfort, Leicester, Reino Unido proporcionó la aprobación ética para este estudio.

Participantes

Una muestra de conveniencia de 203 estudiantes universitarios de una Universidad de Beirut, Líbano, participó en el estudio sobre resiliencia de la identidad, trastornos psicológicos y afrontamiento. Cabe destacar que los datos se reunieron a lo largo de marzo de 2019, es decir, antes de la crisis de la COVID-19 y de la reciente explosión en el Líbano, dos eventos que han tenido implicaciones para el bienestar psicológico de la población en general (Jalabi & Georgy, 2020; Jaspal, Assi et al., 2020). Dado nuestro objetivo de analizar estilos de afrontamiento diferentes en estudiantes heterosexuales y no heterosexuales, hemos procurado activamente reclutar una muestra diversa en términos de orientación sexual. Por tanto, además de hacer una muestra de conveniencia de toda la población de alumnos universitarios de una universidad privada de Beirut, el estudio se difundió a través de un club social centrado en el colectivo LGBT de la universidad. Se esperaba que el resultado sería una muestra más equilibrada de estudiantes heterosexuales y no heterosexuales. Después de leer la hoja de información para participantes y de ofrecer su consentimiento, los participantes completaron de forma voluntaria y anónima el cuestionario online.

La edad de los participantes fue de entre 18 y 33 años (M = 20.1, SD = 2.22). Participaron 135 mujeres (64.9%) y 68 hombres (32.7%). Entre ellos había 141 (69.5%) heterosexuales y 62 (30.5%) no heterosexuales — no heterosexuales identificados como bisexuales (N = 39, 19.2%), gays (N = 14, 6.9%), lesbianas (N = 8, 3.9%%), y otros (N = 1, 0.5%). La mayoría de los participantes comunicaron ser de nacionalidad libanesa (N = 191, 94.1%); cuatro (2%) de nacionalidad palestina; dos (1%) de nacionalidad siria y seis (3%) otras nacionalidades árabes. Setenta (34.5%) participantes se describieron a sí mismos como cristianos maronitas, 40 (19.7%) como musulmanes suníes, 29 (14.3%) como católicos, 25 (12.3%) como musulmanes chiítas, 17 (8.4%) como griegos ortodoxos, 12 (5.9%) como drusos y 10 (4.9%) de otras religiones. La mayoría de los participantes eran solteros (N = 145, 71.4%), seguido por 51 (25.1%) que tenían una relación monógama, uno (0.5%) en una relación abierta, uno (0.5%) comprometido, tres (1.5%) casados y uno (.5%) en una unión civil.

Medidas

Religiosidad

La religiosidad se midió utilizando el Cuestionario Santa Clara de Fuerza de Fe Religiosa (Santa Clara Strength of Religious Faith Questionnaire, Plante et al., 2002) abreviado de cinco ítems que incluyó ítems como: ‘Considero que mi fe me ofrece un sentido y un propósito para mi vida’. Los ítems se midieron con una escala de cinco puntos (1 = ‘totalmente en desacuerdo’ a 5 = ‘totalmente de acuerdo’). Los ítems se totalizaron con puntuaciones posibles que abarcaron desde 5 hasta 25. Una puntuación superior indicó mayor religiosidad (α = .90).

Identificación étnica

La identificación étnica se midió utilizando la Medida Revisada de Identidad Étnica de Múltiples Grupos (Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure-Revised, Phinney & Ong, 2007) de seis ítems, entre los que se incluyeron ítems como: ‘Tengo un intenso sentido de pertenencia con mi propio grupo étnico’. Los ítems se midieron con una escala de cinco puntos (1 = ‘totalmente en desacuerdo’ a 5 = ‘totalmente de acuerdo’). Los ítems se totalizaron con puntuaciones posibles que abarcaron desde 6 hasta 30. Una puntuación superior indicó mayor identificación étnica (α = .84).

Resiliencia de la identidad

La resiliencia de la identidad se midió utilizando una Escala de Principios de Identidad (Identity Principles Scale, Murtagh et al., 2014) de seis ítems, centrándose en las percepciones generales de los individuos sobre los principios de identidad (autoeficacia, autoestima, continuidad, y singularidad). Los ítems incluyeron: ‘No he cambiado a tiempo’ (continuidad) y ‘Me considero una persona con una gran autoestima’ (autoestima). Los ítems se midieron con una escala de cinco puntos (1 = ‘totalmente en desacuerdo’ a 5 = ‘totalmente de acuerdo’). Los ítems se totalizaron con puntuaciones posibles que abarcaron desde seis hasta 30. Una puntuación superior indicó mayor resiliencia de la identidad (α = .68).

Trastornos psicológicos

Los trastornos psicológicos se midieron utilizando el Inventario Breve de Síntomas (Brief Symptom Inventory, Derogatis, 2001) de 18 ítems. Los ítems incluyeron síntomas físicos de depresión, ansiedad y estrés, por ejemplo, ‘Mareos o desmayos’; síntomas psicológicos de ansiedad/pánico y estrés, por ejemplo, ‘No siento ningún interés por las cosas’; e ideas suicidas como ‘Tengo pensamientos de acabar con mi vida’. Los ítems se midieron en una escala de cinco puntos (0 = ‘en absoluto’ a 4 = ‘extremadamente’). Los ítems se totalizaron con puntuaciones posibles que abarcaron desde 0 hasta 72. Una puntuación superior indicó un trastorno psicológico mayor (α = .94).

Estilos de afrontamiento

Los estilos de afrontamiento se midieron por separado utilizando las Subescalas Compromiso Social, Ocultación/Fingimiento y Reconsiderar/Planificar del Afrontamiento con la Escala de Amenaza de la Identidad (Engagement, Concealment/Pretense and Re-Thinking/Planning Subscales of the Coping with Identity Threat Scale, Jaspal, Lopes, Wignall et al., 2020). La Subescala Compromiso social de cuatro ítems incluyó ítems como: ‘Tiendo a relacionarme con otras personas para aprender más sobre temas relevantes’ (α = .75). La Subescala Ocultación/Fingimiento de cuatro ítems incluyó ítems como: ‘Tiendo a convencerme de que no está sucediendo realmente’ (α = .65). La Subescala Reconsiderar/Planificar consistió en ítems como: ‘Tiendo a reconsiderar lo que realmente significan las cosas’ (α = .65). Se midieron en una escala de cinco puntos (1 = ‘no es cierto en mi caso’ hasta 5 = ‘muy cierto en mi caso’). Los ítems de las tres escalas se totalizaron con puntuaciones posibles que abarcaron desde 4 hasta 20 para compromiso social; desde 4 hasta 20 para ocultación/fingimiento; y desde 5 hasta 25 para reconsiderar/planificar.

Análisis estadísticos

Se utilizó la versión 26 del SPSS para realizar los análisis. En primer lugar, se realizaron tests t con muestras independientes remuestradas (bootstrapped) con 1,000 muestras para analizar las diferencias entre los grupos principales de la muestra (sexo: masculino frente a femenino; y orientación sexual: heterosexual frente a no heterosexual) para las variables clave. Se reportaron las ds de Cohen y los intervalos de confianza de 95% (CIs) para mostrar la solidez de las diferencias medias entre grupos para las variables clave. En segundo lugar, se realizó un modelo de ecuaciones estructurales con un remuestreo (bootstrap) con 200 muestras para medir la relación entre las variables independientes orientación sexual y sexo; las variables mediadoras de trastornos psicológicos, resiliencia de la identidad, religiosidad, identificación étnica y compromiso social; y las variables dependientes reconsiderar/planificar y ocultación/fingimiento.

Resultados

Estadísticas descriptivas

Ver en la Tabla 1 el resumen de las estadísticas descriptivas para las variables clave de interés.

Diferencias entre los heterosexuales y no heterosexuales respecto de las variables principales

Los tests t de muestras independientes mostraron que los heterosexuales presentaron una mayor identificación étnica t(201) = 2.79, p = .006] y religiosidad [t(201) = 3.22, p = .001] que los no heterosexuales; y los no heterosexuales muchos más trastornos psicológicos [t(206) = −3.09, p = .002] que los heterosexuales. Estos resultados respaldan la hipótesis 1.

La Tabla 2 contiene un resumen completo de las medias, las desviaciones típicas, los tamaños de los efectos y los intervalos de confianza del 95%.

Diferencias entre hombres y mujeres respecto de las variables principales

Los tests t de muestras independientes mostraron que las mujeres presentaron mayor religiosidad que los hombres [t(201) = −2.04, p < .05] pero los hombres mayor resiliencia de la identidad [t(201) = 3.58, p < .001] y un compromiso superior con el estilo de afrontamiento reconsiderar/planificar [t(201) = 3.32, p = .001] que las mujeres. Estos resultados respaldan la hipótesis 2.

La Tabla 2 contiene un resumen completo de las medias, las desviaciones típicas, los tamaños de los efectos y los intervalos de confianza del 95%.

Correlaciones

La religiosidad se asoció positivamente con la identificación étnica [r(201) = .41, p < .001] y la resiliencia de la identidad [r(201) = .21, p = .003], y se asoció negativamente con los trastornos psicológicos [r(201) = −.25, p = .001]. La identificación étnica se correlacionó positivamente con los estilos de afrontamiento adaptativo compromiso social [r(201) = .18, p = .009] y reconsiderar/planificar [r(201) = .16, p = .027]. La resiliencia de la identidad se asoció negativamente con los trastornos psicológicos [r(201) = −.28, p < .001]. Los trastornos psicológicos se asociaron positivamente con los estilos compromiso social [r(201) = .18, p = .009], ocultación/fingimiento [r(201) = .29, p < .001] y reconsiderar/planificar [r(201) = .33, p < .001]. El compromiso social se asoció positivamente con reconsiderar/planificar [r(201) = .33, p < .001]. Ocultación/fingimiento se asoció positivamente con reconsiderar/planificar [r(201) = .33, p < .001].

Modelo de ecuaciones estructurales

Se probó un modelo de ecuaciones estructurales, basado en el modelo teórico presentado en la Figura 1, con un remuestreo (bootstrap) con 200 muestras con los predictores principales de orientación sexual (heterosexual = 0 frente a no heterosexual = 1) y sexo (masculino = 0 frente a femenino = 1); los mediadores (trastornos psicológicos, resiliencia de la identidad, religiosidad, identificación étnica y compromiso social); y las variables dependientes ocultación/fingimiento y reconsiderar/planificar. El ajuste del modelo fue excelente con χ2(18, 201) = 26.80, p > .05, un Error Cuadrático Medio de Aproximación (Root Mean Square Error of Approximation, RMSEA) de .05, un Índice Tucker-Lewis (Tucker-Lewis Index, TLI) de .92 y un Índice de Ajuste Comparativo (Comparative Fit Index, CFI) de .96. Como se indica en la Figura 2, todas las vías hipotetizadas fueron significativas.

No ser heterosexual se asoció a un mayor nivel de trastornos psicológicos [β = .15, SE = 2.57; p = .027], lo que a su vez tuvo efectos directos positivos sobre ocultación/fingimiento [β = .29, SE = 0.01; p < .001], reconsiderar/planificar [β = .33, SE = 0.01; p < .001] y compromiso social [β = .23, SE = 0.02; p < .001]. Este resultado apoya la hipótesis 6. También hubo efectos de mediación. Primero, no ser heterosexual se asoció con menos religiosidad [β = −.23, SE = 0.88; p < .001], que a su vez se asoció negativamente con los trastornos psicológicos [β = −.16, SE = 0.20; p = .024]. Segundo, la religiosidad se asoció negativamente con el compromiso social [β = −.19, SE = 0.05; p = .009], que a su vez se asoció positivamente con reconsiderar/planificar [β = .21, SE = 0.07; p = .001]. Este resultado apoya la hipótesis 3. Tercero, la religiosidad se asoció positivamente con la identificación étnica [β = .41, SE = 0.05; p < .001], que a su vez se asoció positivamente con el compromiso social [β = .29, SE = 0.06; p < .001] y reconsiderar/planificar [β = .18, SE = 0.05; p = .004]. Cuarto, la religiosidad se asoció positivamente con la resiliencia de la identidad [β = .25, SE = 0.05; p < .001], que a su vez se asoció negativamente con los trastornos psicológicos [β = −.23, SE = 0.27; p < .001] y se asoció positivamente con el compromiso social [β = .21, SE = 0.06; p = .002]. Estos resultados respaldan las hipótesis 4, 5 y 7.

El sexo tuvo efectos directos sobre las variables dependientes. Ser mujer se asoció con un nivel más bajo de reconsiderar/planificar [β = −.23, SE = 0.50; p < .001] pero también con menos ocultación/fingimiento [β = −.14, SE = 0.52; p = .040]. También hubo efectos de mediación. Primero, ser mujer se asoció con menor resiliencia de la identidad [β = −.28, SE = 0.62; p < .001], que a su vez se asoció con el compromiso social, como se ha mencionado más arriba. Segundo, ser mujer se asoció con una mayor religiosidad [β = .15, SE = 0.86; p = .025], que a su vez se asoció directa e indirectamente con las tres variables de afrontamiento, como se ha mencionado más arriba.

Discusión

Las hipótesis incorporadas en el modelo teórico para predecir los estilos de afrontamiento presentadas en la Figura 1 fueron respaldadas por el modelo de ecuaciones estructurales. En este artículo ya se ha mostrado que la orientación sexual tiene efectos indirectos, y el sexo tiene efectos directos e indirectos, sobre el estilo de afrontamiento adaptativo reconsiderar/planificar, y sobre el estilo de afrontamiento no adaptativo ocultación/fingimiento, a través de los mediadores de trastornos psicológicos, religiosidad, identificación étnica, resiliencia de la identidad, y compromiso social. Estos resultados sugieren que es muy probable que los hombres y las mujeres, y los heterosexuales y no heterosexuales en Líbano, estén recurriendo a estilos de afrontamiento diferentes en respuesta a eventos que producen estrés. En particular, nuestros hallazgos indican que las personas no heterosexuales pueden tener menos acceso a los estilos de afrontamiento adaptativo compromiso social y, por tanto, reconsiderar/planificar, y que puede haber distintas vías para los estilos de afrontamiento de hombres y mujeres.

Los trastornos psicológicos se asociaron con cada uno de los tres estilos de afrontamiento. Esto puede atribuirse al hecho de que los individuos recurrirán a una gran cantidad de estrategias de afrontamiento disponibles con el fin de minimizar o erradicar una amenaza para su bienestar psicológico (Breakwell, 1986). Estas estrategias de afrontamiento pueden funcionar de forma individual o conjunta. Es posible que con el paso del tiempo algunos estilos de afrontamiento, como el compromiso social, faciliten el acceso a otros estilos de afrontamiento adaptativo, como reconsiderar/planificar. Nuestros datos respaldaron esta hipótesis. Por ejemplo, un individuo puede relacionarse con otras personas en lo que se refiere a un aspecto de su identidad (por ejemplo, su orientación sexual) antes de reevaluar posteriormente su orientación sexual, y de asimilarla y ajustarla a la estructura de la identidad. Es posible que puedan reconsiderar y planificar para el futuro mientras se relacionan con otras personas. Más aún, es probable que los individuos que emplean una variedad de estilos de afrontamiento, lo hagan de acuerdo con el contexto social (Bolger & Eckenrode, 1991). Por ejemplo, las personas no heterosexuales en Líbano pueden optar por ocultar su identidad sexual en ambientes religiosos, pero involucrarse socialmente con otras personas no heterosexuales en el contexto universitario. Por tanto, no debe sorprendernos que todos los estilos de afrontamiento se asocien individualmente con un trastorno psicológico comunicado, que es un precursor del afrontamiento. Las investigaciones futuras deberán analizar el impacto de los diferentes estilos de afrontamiento sobre los niveles de trastornos psicológicos, lo que arrojaría luz sobre su eficacia.

Los efectos de mediación ofrecen un mayor contexto para el estilo de afrontamiento. Los resultados muestran que las personas no heterosexuales manifiestan menos religiosidad posiblemente debido al conflicto percibido entre su sexualidad y su religión (Wagner et al., 2013). Sin embargo, la religiosidad se asocia negativamente con los trastornos psicológicos, lo que sugiere que esta práctica tiene una función de protección. Además, los resultados indican que a través de la religiosidad los individuos tienen acceso a una identidad étnica, que a su vez está asociada con los estilos de afrontamiento adaptativo reconsiderar/planificar y compromiso social. No obstante, hubo una correlación negativa entre la religiosidad y el estilo de afrontamiento compromiso social. Esto puede atribuirse al enfoque espiritual e individualizado de nuestra medida religiosidad, y no al enfoque sobre la religión institucionalizada de otras medidas. Otra explicación es que, en vista de las estrictas normas relacionadas con la religión, la religiosidad podría reducir la disposición a confiar en alguien, intercambiar confidencias, y buscar el apoyo de otras personas, especialmente en lo que se refiere a problemas estigmatizados que pueden causar trastornos psicológicos (Maatouk & Jaspal, 2019). Estos hallazgos sugieren que, debido a su menor religiosidad y, por tanto, identificación étnica, es menos probable que las personas no heterosexuales adopten estos estilos de afrontamiento. Las personas no heterosexuales pueden normalmente sentirse excluidas de sus grupos religiosos y étnicos, y en consecuencia no participar más en ellos (Assi et al., 2020; Wagner et al., 2013). Sería importante asegurarse de que las personas no heterosexuales tengan un acceso continuado a estos recursos de afrontamiento. No obstante, cabe destacar que esto muestra el camino para un afrontamiento adaptativo entre mujeres, que generalmente manifiestan más religiosidad que los hombres (Abdel-Khalek & Duregger, 2015).

Existe una dimensión grupal social para el afrontamiento. Aunque otros estudios en Líbano se han centrado en la función de la religiosidad en el afrontamiento (Afifi et al., 2020; arhood & Dimassi, 2012; Ghandour & El Sayed, 2013; Ghandour et al., 2009), nuestros resultados indican que la variable de identificación étnica es un determinante importante del afrontamiento adaptativo. De acuerdo con la perspectiva de cura social en psicología social (Wakefield et al., 2019), es probable que la religiosidad constituya una ‘vía’ o un facilitador de identificación de grupos étnicos, en el sentido de que las personas que se identifican con la religión tienen más probabilidades de relacionarse con otros miembros de su grupo étnico y, por tanto, desarrollar simultáneamente un sólido sentido de identidad étnica. La etnicidad, como pertenencia grupal significativa de la sectaria sociedad libanesa, puede ser en sí misma una importante fuente de identidad, representaciones sociales y apoyo social. Más aún, está estrechamente asociada con la religiosidad, pues las personas en Líbano a menudo definen su religión en términos étnicos (Haddad, 2002). Más específicamente, puede no ser necesario que los individuos defiendan creencias religiosas particulares ni manifiesten un vínculo espiritual, aunque pueden obtener un sentido de identidad étnica que está estrechamente asociado a su religión (Beyers, 2017). Cabe destacar que nuestra medida de religiosidad se centra principalmente en la fe religiosa, y no en el hecho de participar en una comunidad religiosa. Por lo tanto, la medida identificación étnica puede en realidad reflejar la dimensión comunitaria de la religión, que previsiblemente está asociada con el estilo de afrontamiento compromiso social. Dicho simplemente, es más probable que un individuo con acceso a un grupo social significativo, como la etnicidad, y con una gran sensación de identificación con él, adopte el estilo de afrontamiento compromiso social, que un individuo que no cuenta con dicho acceso.

Existe también una dimensión de identidad individual para el afrontamiento. De acuerdo con la Teoría del Proceso de la Identidad (Identity Process Theory, Breakwell & Jaspal, 2021), los resultados muestran que la resiliencia de la identidad, es decir, tener una identidad caracterizada por altos niveles de autoestima, autoeficacia, continuidad y singularidad, se asoció con el estilo de afrontamiento adaptativo compromiso social y, por tanto, reconsiderar/planificar. Este particular estilo de afrontamiento ha demostrado ser efectivo a largo plazo, pero puede ser psicológicamente exigente a corto plazo. Después de todo, al relacionarse socialmente con otras personas para afrontar la situación, el individuo puede exponerse a ser estigmatizado, enjuiciado y rechazado. Esto es especialmente cierto para las personas no heterosexuales en Líbano cuya identidad sexual es estigmatizada (Obeid et al., 2020). No obstante, tener una identidad más resiliente puede ofrecer confianza y, en consecuencia, habilidad para recurrir al estilo de afrontamiento compromiso social, facilitando así el estilo de afrontamiento adaptativo reconsiderar/planificar. Nuestros resultados muestran que la vía para el estilo de afrontamiento adaptativo compromiso social entre los hombres se produce a través de la resiliencia de la identidad, que puede estar más fácilmente disponible para los hombres en una sociedad esencialmente patriarcal como es la libanesa (Khatib, 2008).

Una pregunta clave es cómo una persona desarrolla la resiliencia de identidad en el contexto libanés. Los resultados sugieren que la religiosidad es un predictor de la resiliencia de la identidad, además de reiterar la importancia de la religión en la sociedad libanesa. Más específicamente, es posible que debido a que la religión está tan valorada culturalmente en la sociedad libanesa, porque proporciona un sentido a la propia vida (Shaery-Eisenlohr, 2008), es más probable que las personas obtengan una sensación de autoestima, autoeficacia, continuidad y singularidad a partir de esta identidad particular. Sin embargo, en vista del menor acceso a la religión que tienen las personas no heterosexuales, es importante analizar de qué manera los individuos de esta población desarrollan una sensación de resiliencia de la identidad y, esencialmente, cómo puede facilitarse la resiliencia de la identidad.

Limitaciones

Este estudio preliminar tiene varias limitaciones, que deberían abordarse en futuros trabajos. En primer lugar, como estudio transversal, esta investigación ofrece únicamente una imagen empírica del afrontamiento antes de la crisis de la COVID-19, que está asociada a un afecto negativo y malestar (Jaspal, Assi et al., 2020), y de la explosión más reciente en Beirut, que también ha causado mucho sufrimiento (Jalabi & Georgy, 2020). Sería conveniente analizar el afrontamiento en el contexto de estos eventos más recientes utilizando un diseño cruzado de investigación secuencial, es decir, en ‘tiempo real’. De modo similar, el diseño transversal impide las conclusiones acerca de la causalidad. Aunque tratamos el trastorno psicológico como una variable independiente, es bastante posible que los estilos de afrontamiento también tengan un impacto sobre los trastornos psicológicos. Esto debería ser analizado en el futuro. En segundo lugar, el estudio permite comprender los efectos indirectos de la orientación sexual (heterosexual frente a no heterosexual) en los estilos de afrontamiento pero, debido al tamaño relativamente pequeño de la muestra de personas no heterosexuales, no resultó posible diferenciar entre lesbianas, gays y bisexuales. No es fácil reunir participantes no heterosexuales en sociedades que son menos tolerantes con la diversidad sexual, como es la sociedad libanesa. No obstante, futuras investigaciones deberían intentar analizar las diferentes vías para el afrontamiento en estos distintos grupos. Teniendo en cuenta que las investigaciones anteriores en Líbano se centraron en los hombres gay y bisexuales, sería un complemento muy útil para la literatura. En tercer lugar, los datos recogidos pertenecen a estudiantes de una universidad angloparlante a la que asisten alumnos de una clase socioeconómica relativamente acomodada de Beirut, y el enfoque utilizado fue un muestreo de conveniencia. Por tanto, no es posible generalizar los hallazgos más allá de esta muestra de conveniencia en particular. Futuras investigaciones deberían aportar más información, analizando datos recogidos de personas de diferentes niveles socioeconómicos y distintas áreas geográficas del Líbano (es decir, fuera de Beirut). De forma similar, sería conveniente repetir estos hallazgos en otras poblaciones marginales de Líbano, como son los refugiados palestinos y sirios.

Conclusiones

La población libanesa en general ha afrontado una multitud de factores estresantes sociales y psicológicos durante las últimas décadas, entre ellas la crisis de la COVID-19 y la explosión en Beirut en 2020. Es vital analizar, describir y predecir estilos de afrontamiento en diversos grupos de la sociedad. Nuestros hallazgos sugieren que las personas no heterosexuales pueden tener menos probabilidades que las personas heterosexuales para adoptar estilos de afrontamiento adaptativo, como son el compromiso social y reconsiderar/planificar, debido a los menores niveles de religiosidad e identificación étnica, y que los hombres y las mujeres tienen distintas vías para acceder a estilos de afrontamiento adaptativo. La resiliencia de la identidad, la religiosidad y la identificación étnica parecen ser determinantes clave del afrontamiento eficaz. Las intervenciones en Líbano deberían centrarse en conseguir que la religión, la identificación étnica y la resiliencia de la identidad sean más accesibles para las minorías sexuales a través de programas de cambio social. Estos programas de cambio social deberían promover la inclusión, y cuestionar las representaciones sociales negativas de las minorías sexuales, que tienen efectos dañinos no solo sobre el bienestar psicológico sino también sobre el sentido de pertenencia de esta población. Por otra parte, las intervenciones terapéuticas deberían enfocarse en desarrollar la resiliencia de la identidad en personas que corren riesgo de padecer trastornos psicológicos, y que recurren a los servicios de salud mental. Esperamos que la evidencia presentada en este artículo constituya la base para futuras investigaciones e intervenciones en relación con el bienestar psicológico de la sociedad de libanesa.
