Abstract
This is the text of a statement made to students at Buffalo University in New York State on 14 October 1970 after the poet refused to sign a loyalty oath as a condition of being paid for his readings. It is reprinted here because we consider that it is not well known outside the U.S.A. and yet has a very real bearing on the subject matter of Index. It originally appeared in the New York Review of Books.
