Abstract
Background and Purpose
: The purpose of this trial was to analyze the results of laparoscopic nephrectomy and nephroureterectomy in pediatric patients.
Methods
: A total of 90 children, ages 14 days to 14 years, with benign kidney malformations or diseases and lost renal function underwent laparoscopic nephrectomy (56 patients), nephroureterectomy (32 patients), or ureterectomy (2 patients) during a period of 9 years (1994-2002). Three trocars were used in 49 of the 51 patients whose left kidney was removed; a fourth trocar was needed in 17 of the 39 patients who underwent a right-sided procedure. No additional trocars were used in the nephroureterectomy cases.
Results
: The operative time ranged from 25 to 140 minutes (average, 55.89 ± 21.67 minutes). No intraoperative complications or indications required conversion to an open procedure. The hospital stay ranged from 2 to 8 days (average, 3.844 ± 1.226 days).
Conclusions
: We consider laparoscopic methods safe for carrying out pediatric nephrectomy or nephroureterectomy in patients of all age groups with benign disease.
