Abstract

In the years since the journal Drug Repurposing, Repositioning, and Rescue (DRRR) was merged into ASSAY and Drug Development Technologies, the readers of both journals have mutually benefitted from drug repurposing and screening expertise that are complimentary. DRRR special issues, published semi-annually, contain topics covering drug repurposing and are led by Hermann Mucke and his dedicated editorial board.
Drug repurposing continues to be a profitable and innovative translational research exercise. In 2015, the repurposed drug market was valued at $24.4 billion and is expected to increase to $31.3 billion by 2020. 1 ASSAY readers and authors have detailed many strategies to repurpose failed drug candidates, historical drugs within new therapeutic areas, or describe significant new applications for current drugs. However, drug repurposing remains a challenging and rewarding endeavor, often benefitting from a bit of serendipity. Understanding preclinical development, regulatory requirements, and navigating patent pitfalls are often three of the biggest challenges when working on repurposing a drug. In this context, we are delighted to announce that we will be increasing the frequency of DRRR special sections within upcoming issues of ASSAY to highlight the experience and skill our DRRR contributors and editors bring to bear. Our goal is to continue to illustrate the synergism between drug repurposing and high-throughput screening development and how they impact any successful drug discovery program.
To that end, ASSAY and Drug Development Technologies will publish the abstracts of the presentations to be held at the 7th Annual Drug Repurposing, Repositioning and Rescue Conference. This outstanding event (
