Abstract

As we approach a significant milestone in our journal’s history, I am writing to announce an important leadership transition. At the end of October 2024, I will be stepping down from my position as editor-in-chief to pursue an opportunity in industry. ASSAY and Drug Development Technologies is fortunate to welcome Dr. Kevin Lo from the University of Connecticut Health Center as our incoming editor-in-chief.
REFLECTING ON A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE
Leadership transitions, while bittersweet, offer us an opportunity to reflect on our past achievements while embracing new possibilities for growth. Under my stewardship, ASSAY has maintained its commitment to publishing cutting-edge research while expanding its scope and influence within the scientific community. I have endeavored to keep the promise of maintaining rigorous peer review standards, reducing publication timelines, and fostering an inclusive environment that has attracted diverse voices in our field.
With the foundation of pioneering work of ASSAY’s founding editor, Dr. James Inglese, I am proud to have positioned ASSAY as a respected platform for translational scientific advancement. I am grateful to have contributed to a legacy of excellence that will continue to influence ASSAY’s trajectory for years to come.
WELCOMING NEW LEADERSHIP
As we look to the future, I am pleased to announce Dr. Kevin Lo as the new Editor-in-Chief of ASSAY and Drug Development Technologies. Dr. Lo brings his distinguished research background and extensive editorial experience to this role, which will prove invaluable in guiding ASSAY’s next chapter.
With over two decades of experience in biotechnology research and translational science, Dr. Lo exemplifies the interdisciplinary expertise that has become increasingly crucial in today’s rapidly evolving scientific landscape. As an Associate Professor at the University of Connecticut Health Center, his research portfolio spans several critical areas, including: —Tissue regenerative engineering —Biochemistry and cell signaling studies —Biomaterials development —Animal model research —Drug discovery and delivery systems
Dr. Lo’s research programs have consistently secured funding from the National Institutes of Health, demonstrating both the quality and relevance of his work. His ability to bridge basic science research with translational drug development aligns perfectly with ASSAY’s mission to advance scientific knowledge while maintaining real-world impact.
A DISTINGUISHED EDITORIAL BACKGROUND
What makes Dr. Lo particularly well-suited for this role is his extensive editorial experience. As the founding Deputy Editor of the Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities, he has demonstrated his ability to build and establish a journal’s presence in its field. His editorial acumen is further evidenced by his current roles as Associate Editor for both PLoS ONE and Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, as well as his service on the editorial boards of several prestigious publications.
VISION FOR THE FUTURE
Our commitment to scientific excellence remains unwavering as we enter this new era. Under Dr. Lo’s leadership, readers and authors can expect:—Continuing our tradition of rigorous peer review while streamlining the publication process —Expanding our international reach and diversity of contributors —Enhancing our digital presence and accessibility —Fostering greater engagement with our scientific community through special issues and focused sections
The transition process has already begun, with Dr. Lo working closely with ASSAY’s editorial team to ensure continuity in our operations. This early engagement will help maintain our momentum while allowing for a smooth integration of new ideas and approaches.
A COMMUNITY EFFORT
The success of any scientific journal relies not just on its leadership but on the entire community that supports it. Our editorial board members, reviewers, authors, and readers all play crucial roles in maintaining the high standards that define our publication. As we navigate this transition, your continued engagement and support will be more valuable than ever.
I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the members of the ASSAY editorial team and to Mary Ann Liebert Publishing for their steadfast guidance and support during my time as editor-in-chief. It is my hope that I have served as a faithful steward and caretaker of ASSAY, and I am confident that ASSAY’s current success will grow with Dr. Lo’s leadership and the support of the editorial team.
LOOKING AHEAD
In the coming weeks, we will share more detailed information about our plans and initiatives through a formal press release and updates to the ASSAY and Drug Development Technologies website. We encourage you to stay engaged and participate in shaping the future direction of our publication.
This transition marks not an endpoint but a new beginning in ASSAY’s continuing evolution. With Dr. Lo’s leadership, combined with the dedication of our editorial board and the broader scientific community, ASSAY is well-positioned to build upon our strong foundation while exploring new opportunities for growth and innovation.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Kevin Lo to his new role as editor-in-chief. Together, we look forward to continuing ASSAY’s mission of advancing scientific knowledge and fostering scholarly excellence in our field.
