Abstract

This special issue will address the dearth of published research on older Autistic adults by focusing on autism and aging. Authors are encouraged to explore Autistic experience in adulthood and later life from a variety of frameworks and approaches, including those that use a biopsychosocial perspective or build upon social or social relational models of disability, rights-based models, the neurodiversity paradigm, or models of social inclusion.
The topics of interest include the following, but are not limited to:
Healthy aging The aging body and mind Menopause Physical and mental health and health care Identification and support of autistic seniors Changes in friendships, relationships, or other interactions with age Social care and social services Changes in Autistic support needs related to aging Aging Autistics with aging parents Retirement Residential care Aging in place End of Life Lifespan inequalities Community, friendships, and social connections in older age Identity Intersectionality with other disabilities or marginalized identities Stigma and discrimination Factors that promote flourishing in older age
Manuscripts may correspond to any Autism in Adulthood article type, including Original Research, Brief Reports, Advances in Methodology, Conceptual Analysis, Emerging Practices, Literature Reviews, Perspectives, and/or Insights.
We encourage submissions from both Autistic and non-autistic authors. Authors do not need to disclose an autism diagnosis if they do not feel comfortable doing so. However, given the inherent influence of researchers' lived and professional experience on their work, we highly recommend all authors include a positionality statement.
