Response to Spatz re: “Is There an Association Between Breast Hypoplasia and Breastfeeding Outcomes? A Systematic Review”

We first thank Dr. Spatz for her comments. ¹

As identified in our systematic review, ² the search terms used included the keywords “insufficient glandular tissue” or “mammary hypoplasia” or “breast hypoplasia” or “mammary gland hypoplasia” or “droopy breasts” or “snoopy deformity” or “tubular breast*” or “tuberous breast*” AND breastfeeding or “breast feeding” or breast-feeding or lactation.

A Medline search on April 6, 2022 of the term “glandular hypoplasia” revealed four articles in English. Of these four articles, Dr. Spatz is an author of two, one relates to beagle dogs and the other pertains to children and adolescents with Down syndrome.

We apologize for missing Dr. Spatz's case study. We feel this highlights the need to develop consistent definitions for research and clinical practice.
