Abstract

BOSTON, MASS. 10/14/10—Researchers in the Section on Developmental and Stem Cell Biology of the Joslin Diabetes Center have retracted a paper published in Nature on January 28 after the project head became aware of information she said “undermined” her confidence in its conclusions (Mayack SR, Shadrach JL, Kim FS, Wagers AJ. Systemic signals regulate ageing and rejuvenation of blood stem cell niches. Nature 2010;463:495–500). Two of the authors cosigned the retraction; the other, who had been a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory, did not. He has since left the Center.
Another journal has posted a “notice of concern” about a paper published by the postdoc and the director after the latter expressed doubts about its accuracy also (Mayack SR, Wagers AJ. Osteolineage niche cells initiate hematopoietic stem cell mobilization. Blood 2008;112:519–31).
The subject of the papers is the possible role of hematopoietic stem cells in reversing aging.
