Abstract
Globally, there are more than 100 million patients suffering from stroke with an incidence of more than 12 million strokes per year (World Stroke Organization). Stroke is the second-leading cause of death. Additionally, there are over 55 million people worldwide living with dementia This number is expected to rise to 78 million in 2030 and 139 million in 2050 (World Health Organization). Stroke is one of the major causes of vascular cognitive impairment. The annual global cost of dementia is now above US$ 1.3 trillion and is expected to rise to US$ 2.8 trillion by 2050. Both these figures are set to surpass due to the impact of COVID-19.
While we have made some progress in understanding the disease process, we are still a long way away from a cure and even from preventing the progression of the disease.
In this special issue, Brain Connectivity will consider articles covering the full breadth of evidence: from original research papers and reviews articles.
This issue will specifically focus on advances in the treatment of stroke, sequelae of stroke as well as post-stroke cognitive impairment.
Some of the topics of interest include: Advances in thrombolysis and intravascular embolectomy Neuroprotection in stroke Post Stroke Cognitive Impairment Neuroinflammation, blood-brain barrier dysfunction Advances in Fluid biomarkers of stroke and cognitive impairment Advances in structural and functional imaging (both PET and MRI) Novel therapeutic strategies
