Abstract

In the Spotlight
Cyberpsychology has become quite a broad field, covering topics ranging from virtual reality therapy/training, to self-tracking, to mobile technologies. However, the bigger the Cyberpsychology community becomes, the more difficult its is for researchers and practictioners to follow all scientific events, journals, and Web sites that are available. In this and the next issues of CyberSightings, we will try to fill this gap by providing an overview of Cyberpsychology key resources and events, along with a brief description of them. All resources are listed in order of relevance; should I have missed any, please send me an e-mail and I will update the list in one of the upcoming CyberSightings.
The current issue is focused on Cyberpsychology conferences; the next two will cover Cyberpsychology journals and scientific associations respectively.
Cyberpsychology conferences
Title: Annual CyberPsychology and CyberTherapy Conference (CYBER)
Web site:
About the conference: This is “the” conference about cyberpsychology and cybertherapy. It began as a symposium that featured presentations dealing mostly with conceptual matters and future possibilities at the Medicine Meets Virtual Reality Conference. CYBER has now grown to a full-scale conference with presentations that demonstrate controlled clinical trials with unique applications of cutting edge technologies that improve the access and increase the quality of healthcare. Now in its 18th year, this annual event is the official conference of the International Association of CyberPsychology, Training, and Rehabilitation (iACToR).
Title: Medicine Meets Virtual Reality (MMVR)
Web site:
About the conference: “Medicine Meets Virtual Reality” was conceived in 1991 to explore the healthcare utilization of rapidly evolving computing and communications technologies. Physicians, educators, scientists, and engineers gathered to assess how patient care and medical education could be enhanced by increasingly powerful and affordable computers and the expanding Internet. Each specialty brought its own skills and experience. By identifying and nurturing collaborative objectives, they understood that revolutionary tools could be created and existing practices transformed. Two decades later, the curriculum has expanded beyond virtual reality to encompass a broader range of healthcare topics.
Title: International Conference on Persuasive Technology (Persuasive)
Web site:
About the conference: The annual conference, now in its 8th year, features the latest insights into how mobile and Internet-based applications such as mobile games and social networking sites can be designed to support positive behavior changes in areas such as health, safety, and education.
Title: International Workshop on Presence
Website:
About the conference: This yearly event is the official conference of the International Society for Presence Research. The conference is all about the concept of presence, commonly referred to as a sense of “being there” in a technologically mediated environment, and more formally as the perceptual illusion of non-mediation.
