Abstract

Given the worldwide rise of populism and extremism new online risks, such as hate speech and fake news, have emerged. So far, not much is known about the risk factors and consequences of hate speech and fake news involvement in different age groups (adolescence, early, middle, and late adulthood). Similarly, little is known about the effectiveness of prevention and intervention programs to deal with hate speech and fake news and how people who are exposed to those online risks can be effectively supported.
We are seeking for this special issue of Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking original articles that include strong methods, such as a diverse and/or representative samples, longitudinal design, mixed-method studies, or multi-informant studies, and help further our understanding of the risk factors, consequences, and prevention strategies of hate speech and fake news involvement. The following topics will be given full consideration (though other topics will be considered):
Intrapersonal, interpersonal, and contextual risk factors for involvement in hate speech (e.g., witnesses, producers, victims, and/or practicing counter speech) Intrapersonal, interpersonal, and contextual risk factors for sharing and responses to fake news Individual and societal consequences of hate speech and fake news Influencing factors of people's ability to detect hate speech and fake news Moderators and/ or mediators of predictors and/or individual or social outcomes Lifespan differences regarding hate speech or fake news involvement Cultural differences regarding hate speech or fake news involvement Effective strategies around debunking or countering hate speech and fake news Best practices in prevention and intervention (e.g., prevention programs, cybersecurity strategies) concerning hate speech and fake news involvement across the lifespan
