Abstract
The present work is aimed at assessing the water quality index (WQI) for the groundwaters of K.R.Puram industrial area in Bangalore. This has been determined by collecting 30 groundwater samples in and around the industrial area and subjecting the samples to a comprehensive physicochemical analysis. For calculating the WQI, the following 10 parameters have been considered: pH, total hardness, calcium, magnesium, chloride, nitrate, sulphate, total dissolved solids, iron, and fluorides. The WQI for these 30 samples ranges from 20.20 to 309.75, with an average value of 104.67. Forty percent of the samples exceeded 100, the upper limit for drinking water. The high value of WQI at these stations has been found to be mainly from the higher values of iron, nitrate, total dissolved solids, hardness, and fluorides in the groundwater. The analysis reveals that the groundwater of the area needs some treatment before consumption, and it also needs to be protected from the perils of contamination.
