Benjamin K. Canales MD, MPH, graduated in 2001 from LSU Medical School in New Orleans. He completed a urology residency and a combined AUA Foundation Research Scholar/Minimally Invasive Urology Fellowship at the University of Minnesota, with a special focus on the basic science mechanisms involved in kidney stone formation. In 2007, he joined the urology faculty at the University of Florida and now leads the Urology Stone Service at the Gainesville VA, one of busiest kidney stone VA programs in the country.
With NIH funding, Dr. Canales created a hyperoxaluric animal model of bariatric surgery and is developing strategies for spot urinary testing and kidney stone prevention. For his efforts in this area, he received the 2011 Urology Care Foundation's Rising Star in Urology Award and the 2016 AUA Gold Cystoscope Award. He has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed manuscripts and nine book chapters. In addition to his interests in stone disease, Dr. Canales performs minimally invasive surgery for renal tumors and obstruction, including laparoscopic nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy, and pyeloplasty.
Elspeth M. McDougall is a professor in the Department of Urologic Sciences at the University of British Columbia.
Dr. McDougall joined the UBC, Department of Urologic Sciences as professor in 2013 and serves as the Provincial Coordinator for Health Simulation Education for the Faculty of Medicine. She is internationally recognized for her laboratory and clinical research in urologic laparoscopic surgery and for teaching courses on fundamental and advanced endourological, laparoscopic, robotic surgery techniques.
She completed her medical and residency training in Canada before her endourology fellowship at Washington University Medical Center. She spent nine years in academic urology at Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, MO, before going to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, as professor where she developed the Endourology/Laparoscopic Urology Program. In 2002 she became professor of Urology at the University of California, Irvine, where she developed the ongoing, five-day mini-residency training program in minimally invasive urologic surgery for post-graduate urologists, served as the director of the Surgical Education Center and associate dean of Simulation and Medical Education creating a robust multidisciplinary and integrated health professional education program at UC Irvine. She is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (Urology) and certified with the American Board of Urology. Her publications include 271 peer-reviewed journal articles and numerous book chapters. In 2009 Dr. McDougall successfully completed a Masters in Health Profession Education from the University of Chicago at Illinois.
She served as chair of the American Urological Association Office of Education from 2009 to 2015, overseeing all aspects of the educational programs and activities of the AUA. She is a member of the prestigious American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons. In 2017 she was awarded an AUA Presidential Citation for her innovative work in education and curriculum development and the Endourological Society Karl Storz Lifetime Achievement award.
Jean-Marc Creissel joined Cook Medical as a sales representative in Paris in 1990. Since then, he has served in a variety of sales and product management roles, including sales and marketing manager for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, and global director of product management. In 2010, he was named global business unit leader for the Urology clinical division and was named vice president of that same division in 2014. In 2016, Cook named Creissel vice president of operations in greater China, in addition to his current leadership role in the Urology division. Creissel currently resides in Hong Kong.
His 27-year career with Cook has led to an extensive understanding of the clinical and administrative challenges within the global healthcare community. Creissel's passion for ensuring that patients around the world have access to the highest level of care is evident through the Urology division's dedication to education and the development of products that both reduce OR time and prevent the need for repeat procedures.
James E. Lingeman, MD, FACS is well known nationally and internationally for his interest in the areas of kidney stone disease and minimally invasive urologic techniques. He performed the first percutaneous stone removal procedure in the State of Indiana in 1983 and the first ESWL treatment in the United States at Indiana University Health/Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis in 1984. Currently, Dr. Lingeman and Indiana University Health/Methodist Hospital are widely recognized for their expertise in both state-of-the-art techniques for kidney stone removal and also in understanding and preventing kidney stone formation. Dr. Lingeman holds several grants from the National Institutes of Health for the study of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy and kidney stone formation.
Dr. Lingeman is currently Co-Director of the International Kidney Stone Institute and Chairman of the Board of the Methodist Research Institute. Dr. Lingeman is also a Professor of Urology at Indiana University School of Medicine. He is a past president of the Indiana State Urologic Society, and of the North Central Section of the American Urological Association. Dr. Lingeman is also a past president of the Endourology Society. He is a member of the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons (AAGUS) and has authored over 300 peer-reviewed scientific publications.
Dr. Lingeman established a fellowship in stone disease and minimally invasive urology in 1990. He has graduated 23 fellows to date, many of whom hold faculty positions at prominent academic institutions around the world.
Dr. Jihad Kaouk is an American Board certified Urologist and the Director of the Center of Advanced Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute. He also serves as a Professor of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, the Vice Chair for Surgical Innovations, and the chair holder for the Zegarac-Pollock Endowed Chair in laparoscopic and robotic surgery.
In Innovations, Dr. Kaouk has performed several “first” surgical procedures, including the first robotic single port surgery through the belly button in 2008, the first completely transvaginal kidney removal in 2009, and the first robotic perineal prostatectomy in 2014. He holds two USA patents for medical devices used mainly during partial nephrectomy and robotic surgery.
Since 2005, Dr. Kaouk has served on committees at the national and local levels. From 2005–2008, he belonged to the American Urological Association's Urologic Diagnostic and Therapeutic Imaging Task Force, and from 2006–2010 he was on the Guidelines for the Management of Small Renal Masses Committee. Currently, Dr. Kaouk serves on the AUA Laparoscopic, Robotic and New Technology Committee, and is Associate Editor of the journal Urology.
