Abstract
Background:
Calcification of the costal cartilages is a physiological response of the connective tissue due to upright posture to biomechanical strains.
Objective:
To demonstrate the harvesting of ossified costal cartilage with a piezo device, its shaping, and making it suitable for use as a graft in rhinoplasty cases.
Materials and Methods:
This surgical technique was applied in 12 cases. Patients who underwent rhinoplasty by taking ossified costal cartilage were included in the study. Piezo device was used during ossified costal cartilage removal and shaping as graft. They were followed in average 12 months (between 6 and 18 months) and the results were evaluated.
Result:
Desired aesthetic results were achieved in all patients and no obvious irregularity was observed on the nasal dorsum. In the early and long-term follow-ups, complications such as infection, hematoma, and pneumothorax did not develop in the area where the costal cartilage was removed.
Conclusion:
Our findings suggested that using the piezo device is a very useful and good option when it is necessary to take the desired size of ossified costal cartilage without damaging the soft tissue, to shape the grafts to the desired size and to drill holes on the graft.
