Abstract

The goal of this special issue is to update and build on our October 2017 special issue on esports and gambling. The continued and rapid evolution of esports has important legal, regulatory, policy, and consumer protection implications for gambling spaces. This special issue will look at how esports and related gambling can draw on lessons learned from the emergence of other existing gambling verticals to develop and evolve a solid regulatory structure for long-term sustainability.
We welcome empirical research, legal analysis, commentaries, and other articles from experts in the field to address the following issues related to esports:
History, evolution, economic analyses, and future prospects for esports Regulatory questions and challenges, particularly in countries esports may fall under the jurisdiction of gaming commissions Live events and the impacts of COVID-19 Esports betting in the US, including legislative developments and outlooks Market research from regulated jurisdictions Advertising and responsible messaging Legal issues, including match fixing concerns and pending litigation and integrity concerns
