Oxidized Cellulose as an Adjunct to Permanent Mesh in the Repair of Large Incisional Hernias

ABSTRACT

Obese women with ovarian cancer or other pelvic malignancies are prone to develop incisional hernias after their surgical procedure for a variety of reasons. Repair of these defects often requires synthetic mesh, which in most instances is in direct apposition to underlying bowel. Covering the undersurface of the mesh with peritoneum or omentum cannot be done in most cases because they are frequently a site of metastatic disease and have been removed at a prior surgery. The following describes 2 cases where oxidized cellulose was incorporated to cover the undersurface of a piece of permanent mesh that was used to repair a large incisional defect.
