The Role of Three-Dimensional Transvaginal Ultrasound in the Evaluation of Premenopausal Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

ABSTRACT

The three-dimensional (3-D) transvaginal ultrasound studies of 69 consecutive premenopausal women referred for 3-D sonohysterography were retrospectively reviewed. Saline salpingography was not deemed necessary in 18 patients who were visualized satisfactorily without infusion. Space-occupying lesions were identified in 52 patients. This technique allows for imaging in three orthogonal planes. Major advantages of the technique are the rapid speed at which the study can be completed and the ability to easily visualize coronal planes and map intramural extension of submucous myomas.
