Abstract
ABSTRACT
This article describes a sporadic angiomyolipoma of the uterus and reviews the literature on this entity. A 52-year-old woman presented with menorrhagia of 6 months duration that was refractory to conservative management. A hysterectomy was performed, and a 4-cm, pale, polypoid tumor was present in a submucosal location. Microscopic evaluation showed the typical features of an angiomyolipoma composed of mature fat, thick-walled, vessels and spindle-shaped smooth muscle cells. Review of the literature shows that uterine angiomyolipomas both with and without associated tuberous sclerosis are rare, occurring mainly in older patients with either a pelvic mass or abnormal uterine bleeding.
