Abstract

Educational Symposia
Continuing in our mission of education and helping to bridge the gap between patients and the research community, LE&RN sponsored a live-stream symposium in November 2014 entitled, “A Biomechanical Approach to Lymphedema, Understanding and Fixing the Plumbing.” Professor James Moore, Jr., Bagrit and Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Medical Device Design at Imperial College in London, England gave a fascinating lecture on some of the research that is being done in the field of lymphatic system biomechanics and possible solutions to various lymphatic problems such as lymphedema. Rare Disease Day
LE&RN once again participated in Rare Disease Day, which took place on the last day of February. The main objective of Rare Disease Day is to raise awareness about rare diseases and their impact on patients' lives. The campaign targets primarily the general public and also seeks to raise awareness amongst policy makers, public authorities, industry representatives, researchers, health professionals and anyone who has a genuine interest in rare diseases. Many of the inheritable lymphatic conditions are considered rare disorders and while these rare conditions may affect individuals in different ways, the patients and their families are impacted on a daily basis in similar manners such as finding a correct diagnosis, accessing treatments, and dealing with the economic burden. Mission to Bring Awareness
In keeping with LE&RN's mission to fight lymphatic disease and lymphedema through education, research and advocacy, Academy award-winning actress Kathy Bates has joined the cause as LE&RN's spokesperson, leading the organization's membership and Face of Lymphedema campaign. Ms. Bates suffers from lymphedema in both arms following a double mastectomy. She now heads LE&RN's Honorary Board, which includes Olympic champion Sarah Hughes, actors Patricia Clarkson and Jim Dale, and Bravo producer and host Andy Cohen.
