Abstract
This protocol in outline form has been compiled for the housestaff at the UCLA Medical Center for the management of patients with status asthmaticus. It is intended as a practical guide in the diagnosis and treatment of severe asthma and is thus presented in a succinct manner without addressing the more cumbersome issues of pathophysiology and treatment controversies. It should serve as a quick reference for other housestaff and physicians caring for asthmatic patients. Most of the material comes from our collective experience and a few selected references, which are included at the end of the protocol.
