Assessment of a New Space Device (Jet) for Use With Inhaled Beta2-Agonists in Children With Exercise-Induced Asthma

ABSTRACT

In order evaluate a new space device (Jet), a double-blind crossover study was carried out to compare the effects of albuterol 0.2 mg and placebo on exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in 15 asthmatic children. The test treatment was given by pressurized aerosol using either the conventional metered-dose inhaler (MDI) or the new Jet space device. Treatment was given 10 min before the exercise challenge. The fall in FEV₁ and peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) was significantly reduced (p < 0.001) after treatment with albuterol in comparison with treatment by placebo. There was no difference in the effect obtained when albuterol was administered with the conventional MDI or the Jet space device. The use of the new device was considered excellent in 80% of our patients, and no patient demonstrated poor use of the inhalers. The new Jet space device can be used to improve bronchodilator effectiveness in patients who use the MDI incorrectly.
