Abstract

Welcome to the August 2021 issue of Sustainability and Climate Change! We begin this issue with a commentary on the inclusion of sustainability in campus maps, followed by a pedagogical perspective related to incorporating student reflection in addressing the value of water. Articles in this issue address aspects and evaluation of sustainability from the impact of social perception on individual behavior to sustainability in tourism, and the opportunities for supporting sustainability available to higher education.
Sargisson et al. in “By-and-Buy: The Effect of Social Influence on Discounting of Environmental Outcomes” evaluate the relationship between time and the perceived impact of sustainability on individual behavior. Parente, Kesharwani, and Reitz survey Generation Z students with respect to their perception of social norms and personal engagement across various green behaviors.
We also include two articles addressing sustainable tourism. Barbosa highlights the wine industry in Brazil and Ivanov et al. discuss the skills requisite to promote sustainability in the Bulgarian hospitality sector.
This issue concludes with a discussion of opportunity for higher education. McCann, Spangler, and Millison argue for inclusive, hands-on, solutions-based frameworks in academic programs and institutional structures in “Life Paths to Leading Systems-Level change: Higher Education's Pitfalls and Potential.”
Education is a significant theme in all our discussions. However, education is not a monolith. It requires definition and context relative to an objective and the legitimacy of those with the power to confer it. We look forward to sharing future submissions that address the dynamic between education and social change to foster sustainability.
Thank you for your support and readership!
