Abstract

Looking into the new year, we have many opportunities to look forward to, as well as challenges. There is evidence that there is a growing understanding that our human constructed economy and focus on growth must change. However, there is also a false perception that we can maintain our present economic system by simply changing energy sources. There is an arrogance that human science can undo the damage it has already contributed to but simultaneously a growing understanding of nature's ability to regenerate when left to herself.
From a historical perspective, there is evidence that humans have contributed to climate change before and found means to live through it. This perhaps gives us the opportunity to re-evaluate images and text left behind through the lens of warning to future generations, while we determine how we will convey our learnings to those who come after us.
Going forward the greatest opportunity is in eliminating the communication divide that has polarized the discussion on sustainability and climate change. There are distinct variations in how people see the world and position human hierarchy within it. Fostering a common ground based on what we aspire for may provide an opportunity to partner across ideologies.
There is no doubt that fostering sustainability requires local action. This is the opportunity to build community by developing and acknowledging our local interconnection. The role of corporations in dismantling local economies and cooperation within these systems needs attention as does the relationship between profit and disposal. Evaluation of planned and perceived obsolescence along with the incredibility of an economy built on constant consumption remain as themes to address along with solutions to better align the global economy with well-being.
We have much work to do but every word and action has a ripple impact. Thank you for your contribution!
