Abstract

The article entitled “The Potential of Stem Cells in Adult Tissues Representative of the Three Germ Layers” by Obokata et al. (DOI: 10.1089/ten.tea.2010.0385), published in Tissue Engineering, Part A, Volume 17, Numbers 5 and 6, pages 607–615, was printed with some errors related to Figure 3.
Some of PCR bands displayed in Figure 3 were inadvertently duplicated or mistakenly placed in the wrong lanes. This occurred as a result of figures being formatted, by more than one person, concomitantly in both Tokyo and in Boston, using very similar appearing images. The incorrectly labeled lanes were not only very similar in appearance but were also very representative of the actual correct lanes that should have been displayed.
In Figure 3, the bands representing the analysis of Cripto, Klf4, Sox2, and Nat1, using PCRed from the cDNAs are incorrectly portrayed. The incorrectly labeled lanes portraying Cripto, Klf4, Sox2, and Nat1 are not essential for the conclusion.
Figure 3 (revised Figure 3 shown below) has been reformatted to remove the four panels of nonessential data that are ambiguous. The figure retains the panels displaying the expression analysis of markers that are essential for the conclusion.
The text on page 610 describing Figure 3 has also been revised as follows to reflect these changes.
“Oct4, Nanog, Zfp296, Gdf3, Utf1, Ecat1, Esg1, and Fgf5, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, as well as Cripto and Sox 2 were expressed in cells procured from each tissue source.”
The remaining data and the conclusion are unchanged.
The authors apologize for these errors.
