The Rise of Virtual Health Care: Transforming the Health Care Landscape in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: A Review Article

Abstract

Background:

The rise of virtual healthcare underscores the transformative influence of digital technologies in reshaping the healthcare landscape. As technology advances and the global demand for accessible and convenient healthcare services escalates, the virtual healthcare sector is gaining unprecedented momentum. Saudi Arabia, with its ambitious Vision 2030 initiative, is actively embracing digital innovation in the healthcare sector.

Methods:

In this narrative review, we discussed the key drivers and prospects of virtual healthcare in Saudi Arabia, highlighting its potential to enhance healthcare accessibility, quality, and patient outcomes. We also summarized the role of the COVID-19 pandemic in the digital transformation of healthcare in the country. Healthcare services provided by Seha Virtual Hospital in Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest and Middle East’s first virtual hospital, were also described. Finally, we proposed a roadmap for the future development of virtual health in the country.

Results and conclusions:

The integration of virtual healthcare into the existing healthcare system can enhance patient experiences, improve outcomes, and contribute to the overall well-being of the population. However, careful planning, collaboration, and investment are essential to overcome the challenges and ensure the successful implementation and sustainability of virtual healthcare in the country.

Introduction

Virtual health care (VHC) in Saudi Arabia has witnessed remarkable growth and transformation in recent years. Among the Vision 2030 initiatives are the diversification of the economy and improving the quality of life by emphasizing digital innovation in the health care sector.^1

–5 Generally, the term “virtual health care” encompasses telemedicine and telehealth and refers to using advanced digital communication technologies to deliver a wide array of health care services remotely. Such services can include, but are not limited to, remote medical consultations, artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted diagnostics, digital adherence monitoring, remote patient monitoring, on-demand online health education, and augmenting system capacity through artificial intelligence. VHC has become a significant aspect of transformation in the health care industry, offering increased accessibility, convenience, and efficiency for both patients and health care providers.^6

The availability of VHC in Saudi Arabia has produced numerous benefits for patients and health care providers alike. It has improved health care access and convenience by enabling individuals to receive medical consultations and services remotely, regardless of their geographical location—particularly valuable for patients residing in remote areas or those with limited mobility. Moreover, VHC facilitates efficient communication between patients and health care providers, which enhances the patient experience and enables more personalized care.^1

–5 The adoption of VHC in Saudi Arabia was accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which drove the requirements for remote delivery of health care services and minimizing in-person contact. The Saudi government has taken steps to support and regulate VHC services, with various initiatives and partnerships established to promote its implementation. Although the global regulatory frameworks are still developing, the prospects of VHC in Saudi Arabia are promising, with the potential to improve health care accessibility, quality, and patient outcomes significantly.^1

In this review, we discuss the key drivers and prospects of VHC in Saudi Arabia and highlight its potential to enhance health care accessibility, quality, and patient outcomes.

Virtual Health Care: Definition and Components

DEFINITION AND CONCEPT

VHC refers to delivering health care services and medical consultations through digital communication technologies. This innovative concept revolutionizes the health care landscape by harnessing technology to bridge geographical and logistical gaps between patients and health care providers, thereby granting remote access to health care services and medical expertise.^6

VHC reflects a future model of health care that is digital-first, engaging patients where they are, when they need access to advice, diagnostic support, or referrals. Analog or “in-person” services are seen as complements to the VHC, as opposed to the earlier paradigm of digital services complementing brick-and-mortar facility-based care.

At its core, VHC relies on a suite of telecommunication tools, including videoconferencing, mobile applications, and remote monitoring devices, to facilitate seamless communication and the delivery of a wide range of health care services. These services encompass remote consultations, accurate diagnosis, continuous monitoring of vital signs, efficient prescription management, and comprehensive patient education.^6

In this dynamic era of health care, VHC emerges as a transformative force, offering convenience, accessibility, and efficiency for both patients and health care providers. It enables individuals to access health care expertise from the comfort of their homes and eliminates the need for physical visits to medical facilities. Furthermore, VHC empowers health care professionals to extend their reach and provide timely care to patients across geographic boundaries.

By embracing VHC, the health care industry is poised to usher in a new era of patient-centric care, in which individuals can proactively manage their health and well-being, whereas providers offer personalized and accessible services. The references cited herein^6

TELEMEDICINE AND TELEHEALTH

Telemedicine and telehealth are closely related terms, but they differ in scope and application within the health care industry. Telemedicine utilizes telecommunications technology and specifically involves delivering remote clinical services, such as consultations, diagnoses, and treatments. The primary focus of telemedicine is on providing medical care remotely, particularly to patients who cannot easily access health care facilities because of factors including geographical distance, mobility limitations, or other constraints.^9,10 In contrast, telehealth is a broader concept that encompasses a wide spectrum of health care services beyond clinical care. Telehealth includes clinical and nonclinical services like remote patient monitoring, health education, administrative meetings, and training.^10,11 Both telemedicine and telehealth contribute to the advancement of VHC, in which technology plays a pivotal role in extending medical services and improving health care accessibility.¹²

REMOTE PATIENT MONITORING

Remote patient monitoring is a health care practice that allows health care providers to monitor and collect patient data remotely using technology-enabled devices. It involves the use of medical sensors, wearable devices, mobile applications, and communication tools to track and transmit patient data from their homes or other remote locations to health care professionals for analysis and monitoring.^13
–15 The goal of remote patient monitoring is to enable proactive and continuous monitoring of patients’ health conditions outside of traditional health care settings. It provides a means to gather real-time data on vital signs, symptoms, medication adherence, and other relevant health indicators. This data can be used to assess a patient’s health status, detect early warning signs of deterioration or exacerbation of chronic conditions, and make informed decisions regarding their care. Remote patient monitoring has proven to be especially beneficial in situations where regular monitoring is required, such as postoperative recovery, chronic disease management, and elderly care.^13

MOBILE HEALTH (mHEALTH) APPLICATIONS

In this review, we are limiting our definition of mobile health applications (mHealth apps) as patient-facing applications. mHealth apps aim to mobilize health services for delivery to the patient; accordingly, they encompass various aspects of health care, including health tracking and monitoring, medication management, health information and education, telemedicine and virtual consultations, health behavior change and coaching, and health record management. Because mHealth apps provide convenient and accessible tools to monitor health, access information, engage in virtual consultations, and support behavior change,^16

–20 they have the potential to empower individuals, promote self-care, and improve health outcomes.

PERSONAL HEALTH (pHealth) APPLICATIONS AND WEARABLE INTERNET OF THINGS (WIoT)

pHealth is a patient-centered digital health model for the self-management of chronic diseases that require sustainable care. pHealth has been instrumental in devising strategies to promote healthy living by offering low-cost and quality health services. The primary objective is to proactively engage individuals in disease prevention and the early prediction of illness through personalized health care.²¹

The WIoT interconnects wearable sensors that enable the monitoring of human factors and other data, which is useful in enhancing individuals’ everyday quality of life.²² Accordingly, the WIoT is one of the most important technologies that underlie the concept of a pHealth system. (Recommend describing more some of the universe of embedded technologies that are different from “wearables” that embed into the user’s daily life journey—e.g., weighing scales, connected BP cuffs, etc.)

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN VIRTUAL HEALTH CARE

AI, in simple terms, describes the use of complex computational systems to emulate human thinking and problem-solving. This is achieved by leveraging self-learning technologies, such as data mining, pattern recognition, and natural language processing, to mimic patterns of human cognition, process data, and extract meaningful interpretations. Machine learning is a subset of AI that refines its performance through experience. By harnessing these techniques, AI technology plays a significant role in advancing VHC by revolutionizing the delivery of health care services and improving patient outcomes. AI technologies, including machine learning, natural language processing, robotics, and computer vision, can be integrated into VHC systems to augment decision-making and facilitate personalized care.^23

Recently, there has been burgeoning interest in generative AI, which refers to a distinct AI category that involves creating or generating novel content that resembles the characteristics of their training data.²⁸ This is in contrast to traditional AI models, which focus on classifying or predicting existing data. Examples of generative AI include Generative Adversarial Networks and Variational Autoencoders. Additionally, Recurrent Neural Networks and Transformer Models, such as Generative Pretrained Transformer and Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers, can autonomously produce new data, content, or information based on learned patterns and knowledge from existing data, including the ability to predict and generate the next word in a sequence based on context.²⁹

Generative AI has the potential to impact health care and virtual hospital settings significantly and positively. It enables the creation of realistic patient avatars and scenarios, offering medical professionals a safe environment to practice complex procedures and refine their skills by gaining practical experience in a risk-free digital environment. By simulating various patient cases, generative AI contributes to improving patient care in real-world health care settings.³⁰

APPLICATIONS OF AI IN VIRTUAL HEALTH CARE

Several key applications of AI in VHC are documented in the literature. These include diagnostics and imaging, virtual assistants and chatbots, predictive analytics and risk assessment, personalized treatment plans, fraud detection, and cyber security.

Diagnostics and imaging

Trained AI algorithms can analyze medical images, such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs, to identify patterns, anomalies, and potential areas of concern, assisting radiologists in making accurate and timely diagnoses.^31,32

Virtual assistants and chatbots

AI-powered virtual assistants and chatbots are used in VHC settings to interact with patients, answer their questions, and provide basic medical advice. These human-like interfaces can make it easier for patients who are not facile with keyboards or other traditional interfaces to interact with digital systems in a way that mimics human-human interactions. They can collect patient information, offer self-care recommendations, and direct patients to appropriate health care professionals.^32

Predictive analytics and risk assessment

AI algorithms analyze patient data and electronic health records to identify patterns and trends. This information can be used to predict disease progression and guide preventive measures.^36,37

Personalized treatment plans

AI algorithms can analyze vast amounts of patient data, including medical history, genetic information, and treatment outcomes, to generate personalized treatment plans based on individual patient characteristics. These can then be reviewed by a clinician to ensure alignment with clinical judgment and appropriate recommendations.^38,39

Fraud detection and cybersecurity

AI algorithms can detect fraudulent activities, such as insurance fraud or inappropriate billing. They could also enhance cybersecurity by identifying potential vulnerabilities and threats in VHC systems.^40,41

VISION 2030 and VHC in SAUDI ARABIA

Vision 2030 is a strategic framework and transformative initiative launched by the Saudi government in 2016. It outlines a comprehensive plan to diversify the country’s economy, reduce its dependence on oil, and promote social and economic development across various sectors.^1

–5 Digital transformation has been a key focus of this vision, which includes significant efforts to modernize and enhance health care services.

In the health care sector, Vision 2030 aims to leverage digital technologies and innovation to improve health care accessibility, quality, and efficiency. This digital transformation is expected to enhance health care delivery, improve patient outcomes, and contribute to the overall well-being of the population in Saudi Arabia. By leveraging technology and innovation, the government aims to create a sustainable and advanced health care system that meets the evolving needs of citizens and contributes to the country’s economic diversification and growth.^1

DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION IN HEALTH CARE

The following are some key aspects of the digital transformation envisaged in health care under Vision 2030:

Electronic health records

The implementation of a unified electronic health record system is a central objective of Vision 2030. This digital infrastructure may enable health care providers to securely access and share patient health information, enhancing care coordination and continuity across different health care settings.^42,43

Telemedicine and remote care

Vision 2030 promotes the adoption of telemedicine and remote care solutions to overcome geographical barriers and improve access to health care services. Establishing VHC platforms may enable remote consultations, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment, to ensure that health care is accessible to all citizens.^9,10

Health information exchange

Vision 2030 emphasizes the establishment of a robust health information exchange system. Building this system will facilitate the secure and seamless exchange of patient health data between health care providers to improve care coordination, reduce bureaucracy, and improve patient safety.^44,45

Data analytics and artificial intelligence

The utilization of data analytics and AI is a key component of the digital transformation in Saudi health care. These technologies enable the analysis of large datasets to identify trends, patterns, and insights that inform decision-making, improve clinical outcomes, and enhance health care management.^46,47

Health technology innovation

Vision 2030 recognizes the importance of fostering a culture of innovation in health technology to create an ecosystem that supports research and development, encourages entrepreneurship, and attracts investment in health care technology startups. What does this mean in real terms? Will there be funding? Will there be a new entity in the government to stimulate/regulate innovation? And how will the ecosystem support research and development, encourage entrepreneurship, etc?^48,49

Public health and prevention

Vision 2030 emphasizes integrating technology and data-driven approaches in public health initiatives and preventive care. This will allow the building of digital platforms and AI systems to identify disease outbreaks, monitor population health, and implement targeted public health interventions. Using what data sources might be worth mentioning.⁵⁰

Regulatory reforms and governance

Vison 2030 recognizes the need for regulatory reforms that enable and support digital transformation in health care. It aims to develop a robust regulatory framework that addresses privacy and security concerns, ensures interoperability of systems, and promotes innovation. Might be useful to give an update with a few example policies or laws that were introduced or withdrawn to improve and promote the situation.^1

THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC and DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION of HEALTH CARE in SAUDI ARABIA

The COVID-19 pandemic served as a catalyst for digital transformation across various sectors worldwide, and Saudi Arabia has been no exception.^51

–55 The health care sector in the country experienced significant changes and accelerated the adoption of digital technologies in response to the pandemic. The ways that the COVID-19 pandemic has driven digital transformation in Saudi Arabia’s health care system are discussed below.

Telemedicine adoption

The need to maintain social distancing and reduce in-person contact led to a rapid surge in the adoption of telemedicine in Saudi Arabia. Telemedicine platforms enabled patients to access medical advice, consultations, and follow-up care remotely, which not only ensured continuity of care but also increased health care accessibility. Some examples are warranted here.^53

Remote patient monitoring

The pandemic highlighted the importance of monitoring patients remotely, especially those with chronic conditions or those recovering from COVID-19. Remote patient monitoring technologies, such as wearable devices and mobile apps, gained prominence in Saudi Arabia. For example, the home monitoring program study on 14,970 SARS-CoV-2-positive patients treated at home in 2019 during the second and third waves in Saudi Arabia was effective and safe for patients who were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms.⁵⁸

Digital health tools and applications

The pandemic accelerated the adoption of digital health tools and applications in Saudi Arabia. mHealth apps were widely used for self-assessment, symptom tracking, and accessing health care information. These apps provided individuals with resources for COVID-19 updates, self-care guidance, and mental health support.^59,60

Digital vaccine passports

In response to the vaccination campaigns, Saudi Arabia implemented digital vaccine passports. These digital certificates allowed individuals to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination status through mobile apps or digital platforms. These passports have streamlined travel, entry to public venues, and participation in various activities by providing a means to authenticate one’s vaccination status.^61,62

Remote training and education

The pandemic necessitated a shift to remote training and education for health care professionals. Virtual platforms and online resources were utilized for conducting webinars, conferences, and training programs. This digital approach enabled health care professionals in Saudi Arabia to stay updated on the latest medical knowledge, share experiences, and receive ongoing education.^63,64

Data analytics and AI

The pandemic highlighted the importance of data analytics and AI in understanding and managing the spread of COVID-19. Saudi Arabia applied these technologies to track and analyze COVID-19 data, predict disease trends, and inform public health interventions. AI-driven algorithms were also utilized for contact tracing, risk assessment, and resource allocation.^65

Digital health infrastructure investment

To support the increased demand for digital health care services, Saudi Arabia invested in strengthening its digital health infrastructure. This included upgrading telecommunication networks (from 4 to 5 g), enhancing internet connectivity, and expanding the capacity and capabilities of health care systems to accommodate the surge in VHC consultations and data exchange.⁶⁹

IMPLEMENTATION OF VHC IN SAUDI ARABIA

The implementation of VHC in Saudi Arabia has gained significant momentum in recent years, driven by the country’s commitment to advancing health care services and leveraging technology to improve access and quality of care. It is an ongoing process, driven by a clear vision to enhance health care accessibility and quality. The concerted efforts of the government, health care providers, and technology partners have paved the way for a digital transformation in health care delivery, improving patient experiences and outcomes. Continued investments, collaborations, and policy developments are essential to ensure the sustainability and expansion of VHC services across the country.^1

–5 Some key aspects of the implementation of VHC in Saudi Arabia include:

Regulatory framework

The Saudi government, spearheaded by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), proactively established a comprehensive regulatory framework for VHC. This framework prioritizes patient safety, data security, and innovation through clear guidelines, licensing requirements, and a regulatory sandbox, and stands as an exemplary model for other nations in the digital health care landscape.^70
–72 In addition to national efforts, members of government entities including the SFDA, Saudi Authority for Data and Artificial Intelligence, and King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, have collaborated with the World Health Organization to contribute to the international guidelines concerning regulatory considerations for the use of AI in health.⁷³

Telemedicine services

Telemedicine services, including remote consultations, have gained prominence in Saudi Arabia. In collaboration with various health care providers and telemedicine platforms, the Ministry of Health has facilitated the adoption of telemedicine to deliver health care services remotely. Health care providers have integrated telemedicine into their practice, allowing patients to access consultations, follow-up care, and prescription renewals through virtual channels.^74,75

Saudi telehealth network

The Saudi Telehealth Network plays a pivotal role in implementing VHC in the country. It oversees the development and deployment of telemedicine services, facilitates collaboration among health care providers, and supports the integration of telemedicine into the health care system. The center works toward standardizing telemedicine practices, ensuring interoperability, and promoting best practices.⁷⁴

Digital health infrastructure

Saudi Arabia has been investing in building a robust digital health infrastructure to support VHC. This includes upgrading telecommunication networks, enhancing internet connectivity, and ensuring secure data transmission and storage. Ongoing efforts to integrate electronic health record systems and health information exchange platforms enable the seamless sharing of patient information and coordination of care.^1

mHealth apps

The use of mHealth apps has gained popularity in Saudi Arabia, contributing to the implementation of VHC. These government-endorsed standards-based apps allow individuals to access health care information, schedule appointments, and communicate with health care providers. The Saudi Ministry of Health has also developed and endorsed specific mHealth apps for various health-related purposes, including COVID-19 monitoring and vaccination tracking.^76,77

Public–private partnerships

The Saudi government has encouraged collaboration between public and private entities to drive the implementation of VHC. Public health care facilities, private hospitals, and telemedicine companies have collaborated to expand access to VHC services. These public–private partnerships have facilitated the sharing of expertise, technology, and resources, leading to the successful implementation of VHC initiatives.⁷⁸

Patient awareness and education

Saudi Arabia has recognized the importance of patient awareness and education in the adoption of VHC. Efforts have been made to educate the public about the benefits, availability, and proper utilization of VHC services. Awareness campaigns, digital health literacy programs, and the dissemination of information through various channels have helped empower patients to embrace VHC and make informed decisions about their health care needs.^79

SEHA VIRTUAL HOSPITAL

A virtual hospital operates as a dedicated network of secondary and tertiary care facilities based on a “hub-and-spoke” system.⁸⁴ This structure is designed to deliver specialized care services remotely, utilizing a “provider-to-provider” approach for the majority of its services.^85,86 Within this framework, practitioners stationed at a primary hospital (i.e., the hub) provide inpatient and outpatient VHC services efficiently and effectively to patients situated in multiple secondary hospitals (i.e., the spokes).⁸⁴ Consequently, the overarching aim of virtual hospitals is to enhance the capabilities of traditional hospitals and enable them to deliver more accessible, affordable, and comprehensive personalized care.⁸⁴

Saudi Arabia has launched SEHA Virtual Hospital (SVH), the world’s largest and the Middle East’s first virtual hospital. The SVH offers 18 specialties and 50 subspecialties and is connected to a network of more than 170 hospitals.⁸⁷ The establishment of the SVH in Saudi Arabia aligns with the country’s vision to transform health care delivery and enhance patient-centered care. By leveraging technology and innovative approaches, SVH aims to improve access, increase convenience, and enhance patient outcomes. Continued investment, infrastructure development, and collaborative partnerships will further expand the reach and impact of virtual hospitals in Saudi Arabia. The SVH provides the following services:

Tele Critical Care: The critical care unit at SVH is the home for adult, neonatal, and Pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) teams; each team consists of specialists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and clinical pharmacists and performs daily rounds on admitted patients across connected hospitals.

Tele-stroke: Stroke subspecialists are available to attend to any stroke code activated across the network of 40 emergency departments across Saudi Arabia. These stroke code activations are heavily governed with a robust workflow supported by policies and procedures that ensure the safe practice of virtual stroke care.

Tele-EEG: a network of 24 hospitals connected to the central hub where epileptologists and neurophysiologists are available to review continuous monitoring for critically ill patients in the ICU and outpatient electroencephalography studies.

Tele-Radiology: Radiologists across different subspecialties have access to radiological images acquired throughout several Ministry of Health hospitals, where they provide final image interpretation and participate in peer-review evaluation and other practice improvement programs.

Teleconsultations: SVH provides teleconsultation services, enabling patients to connect with health care providers remotely. Through secure video conferencing or telecommunication platforms, patients can have real-time consultations with doctors, discuss their symptoms, receive medical advice, and discuss treatment plans.⁸⁷

Remote Patient monitoring and home care: The SVH facilitates remote monitoring and home care services. Patients with chronic conditions can be equipped with wearable devices or home monitoring kits. These devices enable health care providers to monitor vital signs remotely, collect health data, and intervene when necessary.⁸⁷

Digital health records and data integration: The SVH prioritizes the integration of digital health records and data systems. Electronic health records are utilized to securely store and access patient information, ensuring seamless communication and collaboration between health care providers. Integrated data systems enable efficient patient data sharing, reducing test duplication and enhancing care coordination.⁸⁷

Pharmacy and medication services: The SVH provides virtual pharmacy services to deliver medication to the patients’ homes. Patients can request prescriptions electronically, and pharmacies can promptly dispense and deliver medication.⁸⁷ another aspect of virtual pharmaceutical services that can be utilized in a similar fashion include virtual clinical pharmacists rounds in critically ill patients and Virtual Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs.

Collaborations with health care providers: The SVH collaborates with established health care providers, including hospitals, clinics, and specialist centers. These collaborations allow SVH to leverage the expertise and resources of existing health care facilities, thereby ensuring a comprehensive range of services and seamless continuity of care.⁸⁷

Patient education and support: The SVH prioritizes patient education and support to ensure that individuals are equipped with the necessary knowledge and guidance for VHC. Patients are provided with information on how to navigate virtual platforms, use digital health tools, and access support services when needed.⁸⁷

PROSPECTS AND ROADMAP

The prospects for virtual health in Saudi Arabia appear promising, driven by the nation’s commitment to advancing health care services and leveraging technology to enhance access and quality of care. We suggest some key areas and a roadmap for the future development of virtual health in Saudi Arabia:

Infrastructure development

Continued investments in digital infrastructure, including high-speed internet connectivity and advanced telecommunications networks, are crucial for the expansion of virtual health services. Enhancing infrastructure will ensure reliable and seamless access to VHC platforms across the country.

Regulatory framework enhancement

The regulatory framework for virtual health in Saudi Arabia should be continuously updated and refined to keep pace with technological advancements and changing health care needs. This includes addressing issues related to licensure, liability, data privacy, and security. Clear guidelines and standards will foster trust and enable the widespread adoption of virtual health services.

Interoperability and data integration

Ensuring interoperability and continuous integration of health data across different virtual health platforms and systems is vital. Establishing standardized protocols and data exchange mechanisms will enable health care providers to access and share patient information securely, improving care coordination and patient outcomes.

Telemedicine expansion

Telemedicine will continue to play a significant role in the future of virtual health in Saudi Arabia. Expanding telemedicine services to cover a wide range of medical specialties and conditions will enhance access to specialized care, particularly in remote areas.

Remote patient monitoring

Investing in remote patient monitoring technologies is crucial for the future of VHC in Saudi Arabia. These technologies will allow health care providers to remotely monitor patients’ health conditions and vital signs using wearable devices and home monitoring kits.

AI and data analytics

The integration of AI and data analytics in virtual health systems can enhance diagnostic accuracy, streamline workflows, and facilitate personalized health care. AI-powered tools can assist in triage, decision support, and analyzing large volumes of health care data to derive meaningful insights for improved patient care and population health management.

Public awareness and digital literacy

More efforts are needed to raise public awareness about virtual health. Educational campaigns can help individuals understand the benefits, capabilities, and appropriate use of virtual health services. Digital health literacy programs can empower patients to actively engage in their health care and effectively utilize virtual health platforms. Population-level ad campaigns to generate interest, forge trust, and promote engagement may be helpful to increase utilization. Social champions can be identified who help normalize this paradigm shift in the way health is delivered. Perceived value/nonequivalence by the public will also be a barrier that needs to be overcome.

Collaboration and partnerships

Collaborations among health care providers, technology developers, academia, and government entities are essential for the future development of virtual health in Saudi Arabia. Collaborative initiatives can foster innovation, share best practices, and address common challenges collectively. Public–private partnerships can drive investment and knowledge transfer and accelerate the implementation of virtual health initiatives.

Evaluation and research

Continuous evaluation and research are vital to assess the impact, effectiveness, and outcomes of virtual health services in Saudi Arabia. Conducting rigorous studies and leveraging data analytics will help identify areas of improvement, optimize workflows, and guide future policy decisions to ensure evidence-based virtual health practices.

International collaboration and benchmarking

Engaging in international collaboration and benchmarking with other countries with advanced virtual health systems can provide valuable insights and accelerate progress. Sharing experiences, exchanging knowledge, and adopting successful strategies from global leaders in virtual health can support the further development of virtual health in Saudi Arabia.

Conclusions

This article has outlined the potential of VHC and its implications for Saudi Arabia. Harnessing the capabilities of technology presents a remarkable opportunity for Saudi Arabia to tackle health care accessibility and delivery challenges head-on. Integrating VHC into the existing health care framework stands to revolutionize patient experiences, elevate health care outcomes, and enhance the population’s overall well-being.

Nonetheless, it is imperative to acknowledge that this transformation is not without its hurdles. Success in this endeavor hinges on meticulous planning, robust stakeholder collaboration, and strategic investments. Overcoming these challenges is essential not only for the successful implementation of VHC but also for its sustainability in the Saudi Arabian health care ecosystem.

As Saudi Arabia charts its course toward a future enriched with VHC solutions, we hope that this article catalyzes informed decision-making. By recognizing the potential rewards and acknowledging the complexities, we can collectively pave the way for a health care system that is both responsive and visionary, ensuring a healthier and more accessible future for all its citizens.
