Modeling of Multi-Layer Sandwich Type Structures Using a High-Order Plate Formulation

A general theory for the analysis of multiple layer plate assemblies consisting of interchanging high density, high stiffness layers and low density, low stiffness/compliant interface layers is presented. The high stiffness layers are modeled as generally orthotropic laminated composite plates, and the compliant interface layers are modeled as specially orthotropic solid layers only possessing stiffness in the thickness direction. The multiple layer plate theory includes the transverse flexibility of the compliant interface layers, and the formulation inherently includes a description of the global plate response as well as the local responses of the individual high stiffness and compliant layers. The capabilities of the theory are demonstrated through a numerical example involving the prediction of the complete deformation and stress fields in a 7-layer cantilever sandwich plate composed of 4 solid laminates interfaced by 3 compliant interface layers.
