En este artículo se revisan algunas cuestiones teóricas y aplicadas del desarrollo de las capacidades metalingüísticas. Se presenta el modelo RR de Karmiloff-Smith como solución teórica a un debate sobre lo que debe considerarse reflexión metalingüística, en contraposición a una reflexión procedente del conocimiento tácito sobre el lenguaje. Por otro lado, se presentan datos de investigaciones aplicadas que demuestran los efectos beneficiosos del entrenamiento metalingüístico en el aprendizaje d la lectura.
