Cet article décrit des procédures d'évaluation de la fonction de la main. Elles furent établies en 1964, lors d'une étude faite sur des patients souffrants de rhumatismes et qui devaient subir une arthro-plastie métacarpo-phalangienne. L'on voulait savoir dans quelles mesures l'opération améliore la fonction de la main. Le système d'évaluation se devait d'être bref, afin qu'on puisse s'en servir dans un département achalandé; simple en équipement; spécialisé et objectif afin de permettre des comparaisons; et surtout il devait répondre aux besoins réels des patients.
