Abstract

This is a small, but important and helpful book. It is also, alas, one that might attract few readers. The author should not be discouraged by that possibility, because for those who read it and work through the exercises it will have a significant impact. This book promises instruction in the ‘basics’ of Greek accents. While it is not a comprehensive treatment, it certainly goes beyond the basics. No doubt that word aligns with the titles of similarly named books on language acquisition. However, a better term might have been the ‘essentials’. This book makes clear the standard patterns and rules of Greek accents, and it is essential reading for those who wish to grasp how accents are applied.
The opening chapter provides the ‘basic’ rules, from then on the book guides readers through increasingly complex topics concerning accents. The descriptions are clear and to the point. The exercises at the end of each chapter are carefully selected and graduated in level. This is a user-friendly book, that would be appropriate for an intermediate level Greek class. It is worth noting that a form of this volume was first published through Macquarie University in Sydney in 2005. Since then several refinements have been made that have increased usability. This little volume will be treasured by those willing to invest the time in acquiring knowledge of Greek accents.
