Abstract

Central North-West Local Section hosted a monthly technical lecture on 11 Tuesday, April, at Yokogawa’s offices in Runcorn. The lecture was titled ‘Additive Manufacture – all the dirty secrets!’ and was given by Dr Louise Geekie of Croft Additive Manufacturing based in Warrington.
Tom S Nobes (Programme Secretary) said, We were keen to get a lecture about additive manufacture (aka 3D printing). We have all heard about this subject and to be frank, heard some things that seem to be more hype than fact. Dr Geekie did an excellent job of explaining what additive manufacture is, how it differs from conventional (subtractive) manufacture and the complications which can arise in its use. It certainly is an exciting and novel technology, but just like every other process, it has its limitations. It was also great to hear of BS EN ISO 17296 – Additive Manufacturing and how it is evolving to help potential users. It’s also encouraging to hear all this from a local company.
Croft Additive Manufacturing is a part of Croft Filters. They can scan existing objects and reproduce them via additive manufacture. They can also design and manufacture new parts from scratch, producing in both metals and plastics. They produce parts for the aerospace, pharmaceutical and food industries.
