Frequency features of basalt filament tows under quasi-static and high strain rate tension

This paper reports the tensile behaviors of basalt filament tows under quasi-static and high strain rate tension in frequency domain. The tensile tests of the basalt filament tows under different strain rates (quasi-static: 0.001/s, dynamic: 600–3000/s) were performed on MTS810.23 materials test system and split Hopkinson tension bar (SHTB) system, respectively. It is shown that the mechanical properties of the basalt filament tows were strain-rate sensitive. The energy absorbed by the basalt filament tows increased with the strain rate. From fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis of tension stress vs. time histories, the phase spectrum of the filament tows was dependent on the strain rate. The amplitude spectrum and power of energy absorption of the filament tows were concentrated on a specific frequency range and increased with the strain rate.
