Investigating the mechanical properties and morphology of novalac phenolic resin nanocomposite/hybrid short fibers carbon and glass reinforced with silica nanoparticles

The purpose of this research is to make a nanocomposite with combined fibers in order to achieve two integrated mechanical characters including strength and plastic deformation in an optimal way. Novalac type phenolic resin (PF), short fibers carbon (CF) and glass (GF) and silica (SiO₂) nanoparticles were used for making. The results showed that with the hybrid of carbon and glass fibers (CGF) in the composite, the ultimate strength and Plastic deformation increased compared to the samples without a combination, and it was modified as an optimal sample. Also, the results showed that the composite sample with hybrid fibers with 2 wt% SiO₂ nanoparticles increased the tensile strength by 25%, the bending strength by 48% and the buckling strength by 37%. From the X-ray diffraction and EDX tests, the dispersion of nanoparticles in the composite was determined, and the SEM images showed that with the presence of SiO2 nanoparticles, The amount of adhesion and penetration between resin and fibers has increased. One of the main applications of hybrid nanocomposite can be mentioned portable light structures on land, sea and air, sports goods and orthopedic equipment.
