Exploring pseudo-ductility in hybrid glass/carbon fiber veils laminates

Abstract

The pseudo-ductile response of ${[\pm 45 / 0_{n}]}_{s}$ hybrid composites reinforced with carbon fiber veil plies is explored in this study. Laminates were fabricated by varying the number of carbon veil plies, which modified the glass fiber/carbon fiber veil thickness ratio to achieve stable pseudo-ductile behavior. Stress–strain curves were experimentally obtained to assess the influence of this thickness ratio on curve flattening. The results demonstrated pseudo-ductile behavior characterized by gradual, progressive failure, achieving a pseudo-ductile strain of up to 7.096%. An improvement of up to 450% in pseudo-ductility was achieved compared to values reported in the literature, highlighting the potential of carbon fiber veil as a low-cost reinforcement for developing pseudo-ductile composites using low-performance materials.
