The authors would like to highlight that:
In the section “Outcome Variables: Intergroup Conflict” (starting p. 412) of the above article, it stated that we “draw our conflict data for Africa from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED, version 7, 1997–2016) project (Raleigh et al. 2010) and the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) Georeferenced Event Dataset (UCDP-GED, version 17.1, 1989–2016; Sundberg and Melander 2013, Croicu and Sundberg 2017).”
Unfortunately, we cited the wrong dataset versions. Instead of ACLED version 7, we used ACLED version 6 and instead of UCDP-GED version 17.1, we used version 5.0 (Croicu and Sundberg 2016). Therefore, our results should only be interpreted for the timespan of 1996-2015 and 1989-2015 for the ACLED and UCDP-GED data respectively. The correct sentence should be “draw our conflict data for Africa from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED, version 6, 1996–2015) project (Raleigh et al. 2010) and the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) Georeferenced Event Dataset (UCDP-GED, version 5.0, 1989–2015; Sundberg and Melander 2013, Croicu and Sundberg 2017).”
Reference “Croicu, Mihai, and Ralph Sundberg. 2017. ‘UCDP GED codebook version 17.1.’ Uppsala, Sweden: Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University.” in the article should be replaced with “Croicu, Mihai, and Ralph Sundberg. 2016. ‘UCDP GED Codebook version 5.0.’ Uppsala, Sweden: Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University.”
