Abstract

Alec Samuels was a very active member of the Academy until he died at a goodly age in November last year. Clearly active in many medico-legal societies, including our own, his many in-person attendances at our meetings understandably stopped at the start of the pandemic. Now that we are meeting in person again we are aware that he has not been there. Always most courteous, we had many engaging conversations about important medico-legal matters at our meetings and we could be guaranteed to have a follow-up email after the meeting with helpful comments, something which I understand he extended to other organisations he engaged with.
Alec was a barrister and lawyer, spending most of his working life as an academic at Southampton University. Later in life he also became a magistrate and was elected leader of Southampton Council. He produced many academic papers and was regularly published in our journal, Medicine, Science and the Law.
We miss his active and significant contribution to the Academy and are sorry that he did not live long enough for us to award him Honorary Membership. Nevertheless we won’t forget him. Thank you Alec for being you.
