This is a tribute to my brother, Gerard, depicting his emotions right after we said our goodbyes before I moved across the country. It’s the first project I created after the move, and to me it symbolizes the end of my old life and the beginning of a new one. It was a calming piece to create, in spite of how anxious I was in my new environment.
I was going to use oil pastels, but after some initial sketches, I opted for colored pencil, which is a comforting medium for me. It’s what I used when I first started drawing, and it’s very precise, allowing me to capture fine details. I enjoy experimenting with a variety of other materials, as well, and I want to begin making 3D artworks, like jewelry or automatons.

One summer, years ago, I trained as a bus driver. I was struck by the repetition of all the hulking school buses lined up in rows, in preparation for the coming school year.
My training has focused on both drawing and painting, and I have always combined these techniques in my work. I plan to continue building layered works of art, finding ways to explore and represent the spaces in which we live.
