Abstract

1. ‘Broken Heart’ syndrome in Scotland: A case of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy in a recently widowed lady
Take heart from Scottish authors, who differentiate Takotsubo cardiomyopathy from conventional atheroma using Mayo criteria. A major cardiac output, this case report provides 14 references, ECG, coronary and left ventricular angiographic images.
2. Sacral osteomyelitis following restorative rectal cancer resection: A delayed presentation of dormant pelvic sepsis
Allegedly the first published account, this complication is associated with significant morbidity. Learning points include appropriate medical imaging, directed antibiotic therapy, radiological drainage, nutritional support and definitive surgical intervention.
3. A case report of Lemierre's Syndrome associated with dental sepsis
Potentially fatal, thrombosis of the internal jugular vein, septicaemia and septic emboli typically arise from Fusobacterium necrophorum. Not in this case report. The causative organism is Streptococcus anginosus from dental disease.
4. Groove pancreatitis: A case series and review of the literature
Groove pancreatitis possesses unique symptomatology with characteristic radiological and histological findings. Awareness of these features will ensure clinicians' accurate diagnosis and surgical management of this condition.
5. Unusual cause of small intestine obstruction in a child – Small intestine Anisakiasis: Report of a case
The increasing popularity of eating of sushi is resulting in a rise in anisakiasis. That's the warning from paediatricians in Croatia. This gastronomic case report describes how the nematodes flourish in raw and undercooked fish. A recipe for disaster, the diagnosis is usually made at laparotomy.
6. Neurofibromatosis type-1 with retroperitoneal stromal tumor: One case report
NF-1 is an autosomal dominant condition associated with the development of stromal tumours. Cases in which NF-1 present with retroperitoneal stromal tumours are extremely rare. CT and magnetic resonance images (MRI) are provided with 18 references.
7. Pandemic H1N1 influenza-associated myocarditis in a patient with Castleman's disease
Authors from Spain report a patient with longstanding multicentric Castleman's disease, hyaline-vascular type, who presented with nearly-fatal myocarditis associated with a 2009 pandemic H1N1 influenza virus infection. This is the first case of such an association.
8. A case of valproate-induced hyperammonaemic encephalopathy
This case report alerts clinicians to the risk of hyperammonaemia particularly in the elderly with co-morbidity and polypharmacy, when it may present as new cognitive impairment. The condition is usually reversible on withdrawal of this treatment.
