2. Seizure secondary to cardiac arrythmias
This case stresses the importance of investigating and treating cardiac arrhythmias underlying seizure activity. Implantation of a backup dual chamber permanent pacemaker resulted in this patient with nocturnal epilepsy becoming seizure free.
3. Factor XI deficiency: incidental diagnosis post coronary artery bypass graft
Cardiothoracic surgeons present a case of an uncomplicated 12-month delayed diagnosis of Factor XI deficiency following CABG and sternal rewiring. The potential risks if undiagnosed and the uncharacteristic clinical history of the case are discussed.
4. Small bowel intussusception in a pregnant woman with Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome
This is reported to be the first case of intussusception caused by PJ polyps in pregnancy with potentially significant maternal and foetal morbidity and mortality. In pregnancy, diagnostic imaging is restricted to ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging. Two images and 34 references are provided.
5. A carcinoid tumour arising within a tailgut cyst: a diagnostic challenge
These very rare congenital lesions in the presacral area are most often incidentally discovered in middle-aged women. Authors report the diagnostic difficulties encountered in a case of carcinoid tumour arising from a tailgut cyst in a male patient.
6. Well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma: peritoneal implants are not always metastases in the presence of cancer
Owing to intra-operative uncertainty, a histological diagnosis of WDPM is assisted by combining immunocytochemistry and electron microscopy. The take home message is clear: peritoneal implants are not always metastases in the presence of a known primary malignancy and should always be biopsied.
