Pseudoaneurysm of the sural artery: a rare complication of lower limb angioplasty
This case report describes a rare iatrogenic complication of a percutaneous transluminal angioplasty, which resulted in an aneurysmal lesion within the body of the soleus muscle. Technical aspects are discussed with seven references and five images relevant to vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists.
Methadone and oedema in the palliative care setting: a case report and review of the literature
Methadone is being used with increasing frequency in palliative care for moderate to severe pain that is unresponsive to other opioids. The case report raises important complex pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic issues associated with the adverse effects of methadone with reference to the published literature.
Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lacrimal gland metastatic to the kidney: case report and review of the literature
Adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACCs) are relatively uncommon but aggressive malignant tumours with the capacity for recurrence. This is reported to be the second case of kidney metastasis from a primary lacrimal ACC. Surgery, histology and immunochemistry are discussed. The literature review provides 26 references.
Conservative treatment of splenic infarction and intestinal obstruction caused by a wandering spleen
In an acute presentation, the diagnosis was suggested by known splenic mobility with a palpable and tender mass in the right iliac fossa confirmed radiologically. Conservative management resulted in splenic preservation and a full recovery without surgery. The literature review cites 19 references to the ‘wandering’ spleen.
Glue granuloma following laparoscopic hernia repair
While glue may be simple to apply, effective, safe, inexpensive, painless, cosmetic and bactericidal, surgeons came ‘unstuck’ when glue entered a wound. The key lesson is precise approximation of the skin before application of skin glue.
