Abstract
The underlying dynamics of the Civil War continue to rage in classrooms across America. Since the founding of this country, white supremacy and racial violence have been persistent realities, shaping the lives of children and young people, both white youth—who now make up the minority of the under-18, school-aged population—and young people of color, who make up 52% of U.S. children ages 5–17. Despite this reality, the white-male dominated political right continues its efforts to control how this nation's history is taught—promoting a whitewashed narrative that minimizes, obscures, or erases the history of racial violence and systemic racism.
