Abstract

Whilst it is confidently stated that trauma now far outruns gastroenteritis, HIV and malaria combined as cause of mortality, infectious disease continues to threaten. Tuberculosis is on an inexorable rise globally. The upsurge of dengue is well known, and by no means controlled. We highlight these diseases, but this month put the spotlight on Yellow Fever, another infection spread by the Aedes mosquito. Until recently this was confined in Congo and Angola, but has now reached Brazil, as of course has Zika. The threat of these diseases, as well as the myriad presentations of brucellosis and leptospirosis, continue to menace the world. As travel becomes cheaper and easier, the risks of dissemination of infectious diseases rises exponentially. The rich world must sit up and take notice before it is too late to take effective preventative measures.
