In order to compare the effect of postoperative pain management using patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) and conventional postoperative analgesia (CPA), a randomised clinical trail was conducted including 54 patients. Twenty-seven received PCA intravenously and 27 received CPA by intramuscular/intravenous injections as-needed. The variables studied were the patients' experience of pain (VAS), the total amount of morphine administered the number of doses and injections. Documentation was done for four 24-hour periods following the day of operation. Patient satisfaction was investigated by means of a questionnaire. The PCA group reported a significantly lower level of pain than the CPA group but they administered significantly more morphine during the first 24 hours. The PCA group experienced to a greater extent than the CPA group that they had obtained information about postoperative pain and the method of pain control. Based on the results of the present study, it was decided to change the former routines regarding postoperative pain management at the included clinic, from the use of CPA to the use of PCA.
