Abstract
The basis for understanding any NT book is to be able to analyse the Greek text correctly and clearly. As part of the Baylor Handbook on the Greek NT, this volume joins those already published on Luke, Acts, Ephesians and the Epistles of John which seek to do just that. Taking account of the latest developments in the linguistic study of the NT, this is far more than a student’s handbook to the text. Here Dubis provides a ‘pre-commentary’ to 1 Peter. He guides the reader through the complexities of each verse with a comprehensive grammatical analysis of the Greek text. He also explains the interpretative issues for particular words and phrases for which he interacts with the latest significant commentaries. Dubis also provides his own translation of the text and a glossary of terms that is of some help to the beginner.
This book provides a significant tool for serious students of the Greek text of 1 Peter. By focusing on grammatical and interpretative issues, Dubis frees us from over-dependence on the interpretation of commentators and has given us an opportunity to assess them independently. This is an excellent handbook for those who teach 1 Peter or who are interested in research. However, there are times when the discussion of grammar and interpretative issues may be too technical for those who come to the Greek text of 1 Peter for the first time. This is a shame since such a useful handbook deserves a wide readership.
