It is shown that certain linear multivariable control system design techniques can lead to control systems that possess extremely good robustness characteristics in the sense that there is little loss of performance when a high degree of non-linearity is introduced into the system. This characteristic is illustrated by the application of the technique to the design of a flight control system which achieves flutter suppression and wing load alleviation using active spoilers and tailerons.
