Recent technological advances suggest that by connecting a television camera and associated circuitry to the visual centers of the brain, it may be possible to restore at least a limited amount of visual sensation to totally blind persons. Although this article focuses on the technological aspects of developing a visual prosthesis, future problems related to patient selection and rehabilitation and social work should provide interesting challenges for both researchers and practitioners working with the blind and visually handicapped.
