In three theo-historical crises, a resolution is wrought through a divine oracle, the speech of Yahweh. In each of the three utterances, Yahweh's speech utters characteristic words of faithfulness, compassion, and fidelity. This characteristic speech appears to be Israel's most trusted form of crisis resolution. Three texts are also considered which show the use of the same terms in the mouth of Israel. The paper suggests that this characteristic speech constitutes the material out of which Israel's "theology" may best be understood.
