Abstract

The Journal of Management issues this corrigendum to the following article: D’Oria, L., Crook, T. R., Ketchen, D. J., Jr., Sirmon, D. G., & Wright, M. 2021. The evolution of resource-based inquiry: A review and meta-analytic integration of the strategic resources–actions–performance pathway. Journal of Management, 47(6): 1383–1429. doi:10.1177/0149206321994182. This article was first submitted in June 2019 and was accepted for publication in January 2021.
The authors of this article contacted the editor to note that they had uncovered some coding errors in their data. The authors noted that they revisited their data coding processes and “for the nearly 23,000 coding decisions in their study, we identified 182 data entry mistakes.” Thus, they observed that their original coding was 99.2% accurate, but they found some observations that needed correction. The authors explained that they had two researchers independently re-code the data and that they employed a statistical consultant to critically examine and verify their revised analysis. They reported that the results of their revised analysis with the corrected data entry yielded no substantive changes to the direction or statistical significance of their main models. In the process of reviewing all aspects of their work, though, the authors uncovered some minor typos in the final version of their article that also needed correction, some of which may have arisen in the copyediting process.
An investigatory team at the Journal of Management considered all versions of the paper, reviews, decision letters, and revised analyses. We remain confident in the conclusions of the study. Nonetheless, we also correct the record to reflect the most accurate coding of the data and to rectify some typos in the article. Correcting the record is somewhat complicated by the fact that changing even a few observations affects most of the numbers reported throughout the paper and tables. Therefore, we asked the authors to revise and republish their work to account for the corrected data coding.
The authors also offer a revised online supplement that reflects the re-coded data and corrects a typographical error in the figures with respect to the structural equations modeling arrows being incorrectly depicted in the original online document. The revised online supplement can be found using the following link: https://journals-sagepub-com-s.web.bisu.edu.cn/doi/suppl/10.1177/0149206321994182.
After reviewing the revised version of the paper and discussing the revised analyses with the paper's coauthors, we find there are no differences that change the findings from the main models of the originally published article. One difference in the re-coded data, which the authors note in the revised results, is that one of the post-hoc analyses became significant. In sum, we remain highly confident in the conclusions of the original study and have republished the study with a corrected version that fixes some typos and reports revised results based on a relatively small number of coding errors in the original data. We consulted with the authors, and they concur with all aspects of the correction and this corrigendum. The first two authors wish to express their primary responsibility for these errors.
