A Simulation Method Measuring Psychomotor Nursing Skills

Abstract

A simulated clinical setting was developed to measure proficiency in performing 18 psychomotor nursing skills in an under graduate baccalaureate program. Criterion-refereneed checklists were developed and dependability coefficients based upon generalizability theory are reported. The resulting scores are moderately dependable for making decisions regarding individual mastery of psychomotor nursing skills at the 70%proficiency level. A relatively large Applicant x Skill interaction implies that proficiency on one skill is not highly related to performance on another skill; therefore, the skills selected for testing must be carefully chosen to be representative of the total domain of skills.
