In this special issue, we directed our attention to the study of language and relationships within the health context in order to fill what we saw as a lacuna in the existing literature. We compare and contrast the six articles presented in this issue on four important conceptual dimensions. Each article represents a different approach to discourse analysis, and the articles vary as to which key construct in human communication they examine. Variety exists as well in the types of relationships examined within the articles as well as the definition adopted for health.
