Abstract
The paper describes the evolution of the processes currently being used for the production of extruded crosslinked cellular polyolefin sheet and suggests possible production techniques designed to eliminate problems of oxidation common to existing processes. An attempt is also made to outline the performance requirements of individual components in the expandable olefin formations. A theoretical picture of the rheological conditions during foaming obtained by the use of a torque rheometer modified to allow the simultaneous measurement of crosslinking and gas evolution is described. The physical properties of cellular polyolefin sheet produced by either the irradiation or the chemical crosslinking technique are shown and finally based on available information, an attempt is made to forecast future developments.
